HJF is seeking a Physician II to provide scientific, technical, and programmatic leadership services to the identified program. The Physician is responsible for the management of subjects during their participation in clinical research within established institutional policies and procedures, for the direction and execution of clinical research, ensuring that all necessary steps are followed for safety and regulatory compliance, and for assuring accuracy of complex clinical documentation on subject records, maintaining confidentiality. This position may provide direction for the execution of clinical research programs and may also be referred as the PI or site lead or have a role as an Assistant or Associate Professor.

This position will be in support of translational and clinical research within the Defense Infectious Diseases Directorate (DIDD) at the Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC). The incumbent is tasked with supporting and conducting high-quality translational and clinical research to facilitate the development of infectious disease countermeasures for US military personnel. Within the Directorate is the NMRC Clinical Trials Center (CTC), a 3,500 square foot state-of-the-art facility located in Bethesda, MD that is equipped to conduct Phase 1 and 2 outpatient clinical trials. The NMRC CTC evaluates vaccines, therapeutics, prophylactics, and medical devices in human subjects to suitably advance innovative products from the laboratory to the front line and maximize the medical readiness of the Warfighter. This position will work within the NMRC CTC to support those clinical trial activities.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, directs, and participates in clinical research protocols in conjunction with research physicians, scientists, and other clinical research staff.
  • Directs and participates in the submission of clinical research protocols to review boards and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Provides subject care including screening, evaluating, and monitoring of subjects. Administers investigational product(s) and assesses/reports adverse events (AEs).
  • Leads in responding to medical emergencies.
  • Works to secure funding via grants and proposals, or through other external programmatic stakeholders.
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of the clinical research program.
  • Prepares programmatic reports and scientific findings for presentation and/or publication.
  • May serve as the direct supervisor for clinical research staff.
  • May perform budgetary activities, to include planning/forecasting, preparing, approving, and monitoring budgets.
  • Travels from their assigned workplace to support protocols at other sites as needed.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries, and merit increases; conducts employee performance evaluations; and directs work activities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Medical Degree.
  • More than 2 years of experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary for performing clinical responsibilities related to research protocols.
  • Knowledge of federal and local regulations and policies pertinent to research involving human subjects.
  • Knowledge of medical science and the development of clinical research programs.
  • Experience in the design of clinical trials.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and computer skills, including experience with MS Office products (MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Teams) and Adobe Professional.
  • Ability to develop effective funding applications, reports, presentations, and publications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to work with individuals of all levels.
  • Holds a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Licensure to practice medicine within the continental United States; Board certified or board eligible for certification in the specialty associated with the clinical research program.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
  • Operating motor vehicles, machinery, and/or power tools.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a research center / office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $120,600-$180,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
