Assistant Professor in Chicano and Latino Studies Job No: 543845 Work Type: Instructional Faculty - Temporary/Lecturer Location: Sonoma Categories: Unit 3 - CFA - California Faculty Association, Tenured/Tenure-Track, Full Time, Faculty - Education/Library Science, On-site (work in-person at business location) Department Of Chicano and Latino Studies Faculty Employment Opportunity Job no: 543845 Work type: Instructional Faculty - Tenured/Tenure-Track Location: Sonoma Categories: Tenured/Tenure-Track, Full Time, Instructional Faculty - Tenured/Tenure-Track, Unit 3 CFA - California Faculty Association Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Starting August 2025 (subject to budgetary approval) Department of Chicano and Latino Studies and Spanish Program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Sonoma State University seek a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Latinx Studies, with a focus on the diverse, multilingual educational contexts between Mexico/Central America and the United States, particularly California, and the broader cultures of the larger Spanish-speaking world, beginning Fall 2025. Native or near native fluency in Spanish is required, with a Ph.D. in Spanish or Latinx Studies or related field in hand by the time of appointment, and coursework and/or teaching experience in Latinx Studies and/or Ethnic Studies and Spanish. The successful candidate will be a teacher-scholar with skills, expertise and research in Latinx, Afro Latinx, Indigenous, or diaspora cultures, with an emphasis on education (particularly Spanish heritage language education, sociolinguistic diversity, bilingualism) among Latinos in the US. The candidate will teach and develop lower-division and upper-division courses with the opportunity to create innovative classes in their area/s of expertise and interest within the Spanish Program and in Chicano and Latino Studies. These responsibilities generally include; advising students, participation in campus and systemwide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. The successful candidate will initially be expected to teach lower division courses and upper-division courses (12 units per semester) in the Spanish Program and the Chicano and Latino Studies Department, equally throughout the academic year, per the needs of each program. The candidate will be expected to teach and develop courses in Spanish and in English, given that courses in the Spanish Program are taught in Spanish and courses taught in the Chicano and Latino Studies are taught in English. A core duty of this position will be to strengthen and expand General Education Area F (Ethnic Studies) course offerings. The candidate will also collaborate to strengthen pathways to teaching in Chicano and Latino Studies, the teaching track in Chicano and Latino Studies and the Spanish program. In addition, the candidate will teach courses in their area of expertise. Faculty members are expected to mentor students, engage the broader community, and maintain an active research profile.
