General Purpose of Job: Under the supervision of the Charge RN, the Health Unit Coordinator assist in the maintenance of order for daily operations of the nursing unit. Health Unit Coordinators welcome and greet patients, visitors, physicians and other Caregivers that enter the department. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Greets customers and offers assistance using AIDET.
- Answers incoming telephone calls promptly and courteously, states greeting, name, unit and offer of assistance. Takes messages and delivers to appropriate Caregiver in a timely manner.
- Maintains the patient's medical chart by insuring all forms are properly labeled and incorporates them into the chart in a timely, organized and accurate manner. Confirms each patient chart contains a signed consent for treatment.Completes and documents physican ordered consults timely and accurately.
- Schedules ordered procedures, tests and associated preps, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Maintains the departmental records of admission, discharges, files, reports, schedules, etc.
- Maintains the Pyxis patient label book.
- Answers and screens patient call lights and forwards request to appropriate Caregiver, as delegated.
- Creates/updates and distributes the RN assignment/phone list each shift.
- Updates RN assignment board each shift.
- Maintains unit copy/fax machines and printers with paper and toner.
- Orders and maintains PAR levels of unit supplies and forms
- Retrieves unit mail from the mail room daily, distributing the mail to Caregivers and Leadership as appropriate.
- Communicates significant information regarding patient to appropriate health care team.
- Identifies and trouble shoots technology failures and handles computer down time. Checks EPIC downtime PC daily. Completes daily checklist accordingly.
- Transports patient specimens to laboratory as delegated.
- Actively participates as a team member of assigned unit. Constructively addresses patient and team issues to insure quality patient care and a collaborative work environment.
- Indepently offers assistance to patient care team or other staff.
- Demonstrates adaptability to change and flexibility in accepting various assignments.
- Maintains a clean and orderly nurses station, personal work areas and storage area. Maintains and utilizes pneumatic tube station for clerical and clinical functions.
- Remains on duty until relieved by next replacement or released by Charge RN.
- Reports off to oncoming shift or Charge RN, verbally and or in written format.
- Communicates breaks and absences from desk with Charge RN.
- Acts as preceptor for new Caregivers as assigned.
- Maintains hospital standards by participating in mandatory in-services and requirements.
- Accepts assignments, as delegated by Manager, Unit Leadership or Charge RN.
OB Triage and L&D: (in addition to the duties above)
- Support unit lockdown by maintaining security code lists, answering phone and verfying entry to unit via
- camera and confirmed access code.
- Maintaining delivery logs and Nursery logs.
- Maintaining HUGS system - tags, alarms, patient administration (registering, discharging).
- Scanning pre-natal records into chart.
- Faxing d/c summary reports.
- Turnover room in OB Triage - stripping bed, cleaning and restocking carts.
- Cleaning vaginal probe in OB Triage.
- Registering and escorting patients to room, provide initial instructions.
- Admit/Transfer patients in EPIC and Watchchild.
- Contact physician's for emergent delivery/C-section as needed.
- Calling codes: cardiac, respiratory, emergent delivery, Cesarean section, code pink.
- Contact the OB Response Team as needed.
- Assisting with OR scheduling
RNICU (in addtion to the duties above):
- Support unit lockdown by maintaining security code lists, answering phone and verfying entry to unit via
- camera and confirmed access code
- Maintain visitor log.
- Enter immunizations into MICR
- Notify team of new admission
- Maintain HUGS system - tags, alarms, patient administration (registering, discharging)
- Support sheduling of speicility treatments and consulitations
- Work with birth records department on infant registrations
Special Care Nursery (in addition to the duties above):
- Support unit lockdown by maintaining security code lists, answering phone and verifying entry to unit via
- camera and confirmed access code
- Enter immunization into MICR
- Maintain HUGS system-tags, alarms, patient administration (registering, discharging)
- Perform newborn hearing screens, as delegated.
- Assist with circumcisions, as delegated
- Maintains a clean and orderly nursing unit, empties trash and cleans equpiment, provides all cleaning support to equipment and unit
Mother Baby, PICU, and Peds (In adition to the duties above)
- Support unit lockdown by maintain security code list, answering phone and verifying entry to unit via camera and confirmed access code
- Enter immunization into MICR
- Maintain HUGS/PEDZ system-tags, alarms, patient administration (registering, discharging)
Job Requirements
Work Experience |
* Experience in acute rehabilitation preferred * Minimum 6 months of office experience within the last 5 years. * Previous Unit Coordinator, secretarial, patient billing or admitting experience in healthcare setting - preferred. |
Education |
* High school diploma, GED or successful completion of 12 grades combined with continued enrollment in early college program |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications, software and keyboard functions. * Clerical skills necessary to perform data entry, prepare reports, and tabulate routine data. * Interpersonal skills for effective communication. * Knowledge of basic medical terminology, health insurance, policies, or procedures. * Ability to view a computer monitor for prolonged periods. * Work requires the ability to move throughout the nursing units. * Able to respond to and prioritize multiple requests and variable degrees of unpredictability requiring adaptability in work activities. * Work entails coming in contact with patient specimens during transport |
