Job Summary

The Cybersecurity Software Security Engineer is responsible for assisting in the implementation and management of security solutions for Microsoft 365 and Azure environments. This role focuses on ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of our cloud-based services through advanced threat detection, incident response, and compliance with security policies and standards. The engineer will enhance the security posture of our university, with a particular emphasis on Microsoft 365 security. Key responsibilities include configuring and managing security tools, conducting security assessments, automating security tasks, and collaborating with various IT units to integrate security measures.

  • Assists with developing and implementing security architectures and frameworks for Microsoft 365 and Azure environments.
  • Configures and manages security tools such as Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Azure Policy, Splunk, Microsoft Defender for Microsoft 365, Azure Key Vault, Azure Web Application Firewall (WAF), and Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) solutions.
  • Ensures compliance with security policies, standards, and best practices, including frameworks such as CIS Controls and NIST 800-53.
  • Reviews regularly and updates security policies to adapt to emerging threats and technological advancements.
  • Manages the security configuration and monitoring of Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Teams, and other applications.
  • Implements and maintains advanced threat protection solutions such as Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Microsoft Cloud App Security, and Microsoft Information Protection.
  • Assists in developing and enforcing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies, Information Protection policies, and Conditional Access policies within Microsoft 365.
  • Monitors and responds to security alerts and incidents using tools such as Microsoft Purview and Splunk.
  • Conducts regular security assessments and audits of Microsoft 365 configurations to ensure compliance and security posture.
  • Works closely with different IT units to integrate security into their processes.
  • Provides training and awareness programs to enhance the security knowledge of staff regarding Microsoft 365 and Azure.
  • Automates repetitive security tasks to improve efficiency and reduce human error.
  • Develops and implements security automation scripts using PowerShell, Azure CLI, Terraform, or other scripting languages.
  • Works within DevOps automation processes to integrate security measures into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Utilizes Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles to manage and provision cloud resources securely.
  • Supports efforts to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including FERPA, GLBA, and HIPAA.
  • Performs essential duties during any emergencies, such as hurricanes, storms and/or any other University emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during University emergency closings with appropriate notification by department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with two (2) years related experience; OR six (6) years related experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Microsoft Certified Azure Security Engineer Associate or relevant certification.
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview, including Data Loss Prevention (DLP), Information Protection, Threat Protection, and Compliance Management.
  • Knowledge of Zero Trust architecture and principles.
  • Experience working within DevOps automation processes.
  • Proficiency with GitHub for version control and collaboration on security automation scripts and configurations.
