Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina.
Job Duties
Positions in this banded class perform skilled technical work in the administration of specialized procedures/studies used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients - ultrasound, cardiac graphics, and nuclear medicine. These positions perform diagnostic testing in a variety of clinical settings.
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound technique which records the echoes of high frequency sound waves as they bounce off heart structures in order to study movement and size of various cardiac structures. This provides a reliable diagnosis of various heart disorders. In pediatric patients, the large number of complex congenital abnormalities of the heart and great vessels that exist require a more detailed and in-depth ultrasound evaluation than in an adult population where the focus of echocardiography is primarily cardiac pump function and valve function. In regard to the performance of echocardiography studies, the technologist rst must correlate clinical history with the exam to be performed and consult with physician as necessary. The technologist's primary tasks include: demonstrate cross-sectional anatomy through proper patient positioning and transducer selection and determine normal from abnormal anatomy and physiology. Review images for identication, technique and completeness and then records this onto XCELERA archive system. Participates in reading session with physician (s) contributing technical, professional knowledge and observation to the nal diagnostic impression. Obtains accurate measurements; calculations and pertinent information are obtained and recorded. Demonstrates knowledge and competency in performing quality echocardiograms on patients ranging from newborns to adults and interest in fetal ultrasound. Successfully communicates with pediatric patients in order to obtain quality exams is expected. Demonstrates competency in monitoring patients for safety purposes. This is a part-time temporary position.
Minimum Education/Experience
Associate's degree in medical sonography, cardio/vascular sonography, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licenses.
