About the Opportunity

The Hazing Prevention and Leadership Coordinator is a key leader within USC Student Life and the University. The Coordinator is responsible for the functional area and, in collaboration with direct reports, oversees and implements support and resources for over 800 student organizations.

This incumbent will coordinate campus prevention education and leadership development centered on hazing prevention and risk education for communities such as Student Organizations, Fraternities and Sororities, Club Sports, the Trojan Marching Band, and other specialized student populations. This position is a member of the Campus Activities team working directly with Recognized Student Organizations and other student leaders.

Key responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibility is to lead hazing prevention work for Student Life, including increasing awareness, reporting, and educating the campus community with the goal of shifting the culture on campus away from hazing and hazing-like behaviors.
  • Co-lead and coordinate the university-wide Hazing Prevention Taskforce on behalf of Student Life.
  • Lead the programming and planning for Hazing Prevention Week in the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Facilitate and create hazing prevention workshops for student organizations and make workshops available for students to request.
  • Facilitate hazing prevention trainings for Student Life departments as requested.
  • Represent Campus Activities as a member of the University Wellbeing Collective Taskforce and collective work.
  • Consult with the Office of Community Expectations on any cases involving alleged hazing.
  • Serve as a liaison to Fraternity and Sorority Leadership and Development, Spirit Programs, Rec Sports, and other student organization areas for hazing prevention education, resources, and collaborations.
  • Develop hazing-specific educational initiatives that will be utilized across the university.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to be a resource for hazing prevention education and ensure program content aligns with the university's prevention goals.
  • Serve as a resource and referral agent for students who would like to report instances of hazing.
  • Train student leaders and staff members on signs of hazing and other high-risk behavior in student organizations.
  • Attend and participate in the Hazing Prevention Institute to gain knowledge and resources to inform practices at USC.
  • Coordinate, implement, and track the Prevention Zone modules used for student leaders.
  • Conduct regular assessments of hazing prevention and other risk prevention education to ensure effectiveness and relevancy.
  • Assist with the recruitment and training of student workers.
  • Conduct assessment and develop learning outcomes hazing prevention education and workshops.
  • Support the university, division, and department initiatives.
  • Attend some night and weekend meetings/programs as required.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners, students, and organization members on leadership and hazing trainings, working with minors, and cross-campus event organization and events policies.
  • Supervise student staff and organize projects for their daily work.

Student Organization responsibilities include:

  • Implementation of leadership education pertaining to safety and risk mitigation for student organizations as part of the recognition process.
  • Development and implementation of group responsibility & leadership workshops and other educational sanctions pertaining to student organization conduct.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop a multi-dose, multi-year curriculum that considers the broader framework regarding the university's response to high-risk behavior related to Recognized Student Organizations (RSO) across campus.
  • Support the Assistant Director with RSO case follow-up/fulfillment of outcomes and facilitate RSO meetings around intergroup dynamics/ conflict mediation.
  • Serve as point of contact for academic and pre-professional RSOs.
  • Oversee and lead the RSO Officer Community Project in connecting students to resources and each other.
  • Manage the RSO Slack channel and communications.
  • Create and implement plans for virtual engagement and updates for students.
  • Supervise student workers and oversee their work/projects related to RSO, Leadership, and Hazing Prevention initiatives.
  • Supporting, creating, and updating the student organization recognition process

Required qualifications:

Master's degree/Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

  • 3 years of hands-on experience working with college students in an advisory capacity in a division or department of student affairs at a large research institution of higher education.
  • Experience building partnerships and collaboration across departments in a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience working with the fraternity and sorority community.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate in education or related terminal degree.

5 years of experience

  • administering or developing student programs in higher education.
  • Experience with leadership development, prevention, and risk management concepts and education.
  • Cultural competence and demonstrated effectiveness in working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience with workshop and program development
  • Experience presenting or facilitating groups
  • Willing to learn in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

This position is required to attend conferences and trainings to keep certifications and knowledge base up to date on hazing prevention.

The annual base salary range for this position is $68,000- $71,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
