Job Summary:

The Associate Director - Faculty Affairs will provide administrative leadership in human resources, faculty development, quality improvement and facilities management for the Department of Medicine's clinical, education, research and community outreach missions under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and Chair of the Department of Medicine. The Associate Director will act in the stead of the CAO when the CAO is not available. This position will independently identify problems and develop solutions and direct others in implementation of the solutions. The incumbent will be expected to keep current with new innovations in academic medicine, make independent decisions regarding staffing for the support areas within various units, and participate in the strategic planning process providing input on prioritizing goals.

The position entails a high level of complexity in day-to-day operations and requires a high level of initiative, creativity and personal responsibility. The complexity is evident as the individual must work with and coordinate operations and human resources between several entities such as the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), the UW Health (UWH), and affiliated hospitals.

The Associate Director - Faculty Affairs reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer for the Department of Medicine and works in close cooperation as a member of the administrative leadership team.


Responsibilities:
Performs, manages, or leads activities to ensure that health services, medical care, medical and health professions education, and research programs are delivered effectively, efficiently, and securely. As a senior advisor to the Department Administrator assists in the planning, organization, direction, evaluation, and improvement of health care operations, clinical education programs, research programs, and health information systems. Performs healthcare administration, healthcare regulatory compliance, patient relations and operational services. Reporting directly to the Department Administrator, provides leadership for the management team and is responsible for the administration of the Department's clinical, research, teaching, and service programs.

  • 10% Assists in the development of strategic and short-term planning processes, and facilitates the obtainment and validation of data needed for strategic decision-making
  • 50% Provides leadership, guidance and management of the department's clinical, research, teaching and service programs and staff to ensure efficient and effective operations
  • 5% Assists in developing and administering budgets across multiple organizations including University of Wisconsin (UW) Health, University of Wisconsin (UW) - Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), and University of Wisconsin (UW) Foundation. Oversees financial operations including grants, contract, clinical, and other funds to ensure adherence to prudent and generally accepted accounting practices, and compliance with Federal, State, university and sponsor rules, regulations, laws and bylaws
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% Provides operational oversight and management of office, research, and clinical space on and off campus, department information systems, regional network development and activities, communication and marketing of department activities, resources and accomplishments, and department philanthropic activities including meeting with and engaging potential donors
  • 10% Provides leadership, guidance and management of the department's faculty development and mentorship programs, including long-and short-term initiatives in wellbeing and diversity, equity and inclusion
  • 5% Partners with UW Health and VA stakeholders on the delivery and implementation of health system priorities to achieve business unit objectives, including faculty-physician employee relations, to ensure a high degree of consistency
  • 5% Provides full service advising resources and services, provides information about education and career development options and academic requirements and communicates directly with faculty regarding all department missions

Qualifications:

Experience:
- A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience with a record of significant accomplishments in managing in an academic and/or academic medical center environment is required.
- Supervisory and leadership experience is required.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing administrative, human resources and operational processes and resources for clinical faculty is preferred.
- Project management experience is preferred.

Desired Attributes:
- Demonstrated in-depth understanding of academic medicine's multiple missions of education, research, clinical and community service is highly preferred.
- This position requires strong leadership, matrixed-management, faculty relations, team building, systems expertise, creativity, flexibility, collaboration, organization assessment, decision-making and interpersonal and staff development skills as well as the ability to operate in high-pressure situations.
- Incumbent of the role needs to possess solid oral/written communication skills.
- Candidates must also demonstrate a high degree of initiative, operational efficiencies and cost containment, human resource management and strategic planning.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $210,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $210,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship.
