Job Summary

The Department of Technology is seeking extra help related to laboratory maintenance. The position requires a wide range of troubleshooting and maintenance knowledge and skill in the areas of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic machines, tools, instruments, and test equipment. Below are some specific requirements of the position:

1. Knowledge of and skill in troubleshooting a wide assortment of mechanical, electrical, electronic (analog and digital), and pneumatic computer-controlled machines, tools, instruments, and test equipment associated with industrial technology laboratories.
2. Skills and knowledge of the performance of routine and preventative maintenance of equipment.
3. Ability to read and understand technical literature/manuals and apply information to the installation, repair, and maintenance of equipment.
4. Knowledge of safe work practices and disposal of hazardous materials.
5. Ability to work with faculty, staff, and student to solve technical problems.
6. Ability to work independently and set own schedule and priorities based upon the needs of the department.
7. Willing and able to learn new technical skills.
8. Ability to follow instructions and work from blueprints, construction drawings, shop drawings, sketches, and diagrams.


Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$18-$20/hour


Required Qualifications

1. Post-secondary coursework or apprenticeship in mechanical or electrical systems or closely related field.

2. At least five-years of experience as a machinist, electrician, or similar position in a closely related field.


Work Hours

May work up to 28 hours per week. Work hours will be determined upon hire within an 8:00 - 4:30 workday.

Special Instructions for Applicants

Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University's supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.

Applicable part-time work experience will be considered toward qualifying for this position; however, it will be converted to a full-time equivalency to determine combined length of experience.
