Essential Job Duties |
The
Recycling Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the daily operations of the recycling collections team. This role includes managing scheduled collections for bulky waste and special recycling streams, as well as responding to and scheduling customer requests for services such as event recycling bins, office cleanout carts, and more. Additionally, the
Recycling Supervisor plays a key role in implementing key Waste Reduction and Recycling (
WRR) programs, including the Zero Waste Workplace initiative and major campus events like student Move In and Move Out. This position offers the opportunity to lead a dedicated team and contribute to the university's sustainability goals through effective recycling management and customer service.
Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Supervise a team of three staff members, along with 2-3 temporary employees and student interns. Provide direction, training, and performance management to ensure efficient operations.
- Oversee daily and weekly recycling collections for various materials including electronics, pallets, shredded paper, styrofoam, and more. Evaluate the best methods for collection, storage, and transportation of materials.
- Lead the implementation of key WRR programs such as Zero Waste Workplace and support large campus events like Move In, Move Out, and Packapalooza.
- Analyze data from daily routes, weight tickets, and customer feedback to optimize collection routes and improve processes. Regularly assess high-volume locations to adjust schedules and service platforms.
- Handle approximately 1,200 customer requests annually, ensuring timely and efficient responses to requests for recycling containers, office cleanout carts, bulky waste removal, and other services.
- Collect and analyze data from route sheets, weight tickets, and other sources to advise on route efficiency, infrastructure usage, and process improvements. Use this data to compile the annual report for the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ).
- Utilize AiM software to manage and schedule work requests, workflows, and employee time. Assist staff in transitioning from the current Google-based system to AiM for work requests.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customer requests, ensuring clear, concise communication via email, phone, and in-person interactions with staff, students, faculty, and external partners.
- Plan and schedule recycling support for special projects and events across campus, collaborating with various departments and divisions as needed.
- Provide day-to-day supervision, performance management, and training for staff. Monitor staff work performance, conduct, and equipment operation to ensure safety and effectiveness. Responsible for staff training in equipment operation, safety, and vehicle maintenance.

Other Responsibilities |
- Position serves in a mandatory role and is essential to the operations of the university. May be required to work during adverse weather conditions and work even if the university closes. Snow removal operations as directed by supervisors.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation. Up to 60 pounds occasionally.
- Knowledge of recycling markets and best practices for collections.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience operating trucks with lift gates, box trucks, and forklifts
- Ability to provide on the job training to operators in the areas of equipment operations, safety, inspection, maintenance, repair and policy and procedure.
- Strong supervisory skills or experience as a crew leader, or lead.
- Basic computer skills and experience.
