GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under supervision and direction of the Immunopathology Lab Director and the Technical Director of the Immunopathology Unit, incumbent is responsible for developing and performing various immunohistochemical techniques to provide staff pathologists with important information needed for use in the diagnoses, treatment and patient management of disease.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Assists in the overseeing of the Immunofluorescence laboratory of the Immunopathology Unit.
  • Trains new technologists on proper procedures and techniques, evaluates new technology for clinical application and assists in updating procedure manuals for laboratory inspections and accreditations such JCAHO.
  • Functions as principal technical specialist for the Immunofluorescence laboratory, provides instruction in special techniques, methodology and the reading and interpreting of test results to students, residents; provides all of the above except the reading and interpreting of test results to the pathologists.
  • Performs diagnostic direct immunofluorescence staining procedures on skin and kidney biopsies and examines slides with pathologist using a fluorescence microscope for the detection of various immune-mediated disease processes.
  • Performs indirect immunofluorescence staining procedures using patient sera for the detection of autoantibodies in patients suspected of having immuno-mediated disease of the skin and the kidney. Documents results by photographing and maintaining log books.
  • Performs gel electrophoresis, transfer, and Western Blot Analysis for the detection of anti-GBM antibodies for vacation and sick coverage.
  • Performs enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for detection of autoantibodies directed against the glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM).
  • Maintains quality control logs on a variety of equipment including cryostat, microtome, centrifuge, refrigerators etc.
  • Picks up clinical diagnostic biopsies as needed, including dividing specimen appropriately for electron microscopy, immunofluorescence and light microscopic studies.
  • Accessions specimens and bills patients for all clinical services.
  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies as needed.
  • Responsible for quality control of reagents including antibodies.


Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum of B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology or Chemistry or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of laboratory experience
  • ASCP Certification Required


SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:


  • Familiarity with immunology, computers, and the metric system. Knowledge of chemistry; familiarity with the concepts of molarity, normality, molecular weight, formula weight of chemicals.
  • Familiarity with how to make dilutions from stock solutions.
  • Knowledge of good laboratory technique.
  • Must be able to do mathematical calculations, and read/write English.
  • Must know proper handling procedure of chemicals.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail.
  • Must be organized and capable of following protocols and have ability to devise or adapt techniques if needed to achieve desired goals.
  • Supervisory skills are needed to instruct technologist or residents.
  • Ability to recognize novel or emergency situations and respond appropriately.
  • Good hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work well with others.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • May be exposed to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Work environment may be noisy or crowded.
