Software Engineering Manager in Operational Technology

What You'll Do in This Position We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineering Manager in Operational Technology (OT) to lead and inspire our team of software engineers. As a key member of our technology leadership, you will play a crucial role in the development and delivery of high-quality software solutions.
The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with strong leadership and communication skills to drive the success of our engineering projects. This role is instrumental in ensuring the safety, reliability, security, and performance of our OT systems. This is an on-site position with limited-to-no telework.
Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Team Leadership and Employee Development: Provide strong leadership to a team of software engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Set clear goals and expectations and inspire the team to achieve high levels of performance. Mentor and guide team members in their professional development via formal and informal training and coaching from our experienced staff.
2. Project Management: Oversee the estimating, planning, execution, and delivery of software projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within scope. Ensure DOE orders, division engineering manual, National Cyber Security Standards, and departmental software development life cycle procedures are followed.
3. Technical Expertise: Maintain an understanding of software development principles, technologies, and best practices. Assist the team in solving technical challenges and provide guidance on architectural decisions. Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies.
4. Process Improvement: Continuously assess and improve our development processes to enhance efficiency and productivity. Implement and champion best practices, including Agile, CI/CD, coding standards, and quality assurance.
5. Communication and Customer Interaction: Effectively communicate project status, risks, and opportunities to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Explain cost and schedule variances to management and customers (e.g., operations, DOE, NNSA, etc.).
6. Recruitment and Onboarding: Participate in the recruitment process by interviewing and assessing potential candidates. Lead the onboarding process for new team members, ensuring a smooth transition into the team and company culture.
Security Clearance Information SRNS is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, criminal records, and employment history, and education verifications. Positions with SRNS may require applicants to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Factors such as pre-employment background review results, dual citizenship status, and unpaid and/or unfiled taxes may impact your ability to obtain a security clearance. Qualifications We Require High School Diploma, GED, or other equivalent State Credential
Other Qualifications Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Ability to work on site.
Qualifications We Desire College degree in a Technical or Management/Leadership Discipline, to include Computer Science (CS), Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology (IT), Management Information Systems (MIS), and Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Demonstrated experience building and leading software engineering teams.
Strong background in agile methodologies and the ability to mentor others in their use.
Understanding of modern development and deployment infrastructure, including CI/CD, testing, and enterprise deployment.
Knowledge of Software Systems, Software Development Life Cycle, and Software Quality Assurance.
Knowledge of Safety Software.
Experience in estimating, budgeting, and controlling project scope.
Knowledge of company policies and administrative practices.
Knowledge of current technologies.
Working knowledge of regulatory requirements.
Able to apply engineering judgment, often in complex situations, to determine acceptability or proposed solutions, compliance with safety requirements, and recommendations on DOE reportability.
