The Opportunity:

The Sr. Business Intelligence Engineer is responsible for overall design of data and reporting solutions developed by the software development team in partnership with eCornell's marketing, operations and finance teams. The BI Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation and monitoring of the data transfer / ETL processes from OLTP systems to the warehouse and working with analysts on visualization of the data through Tableau reports. The Sr. BI Engineer will envision and create solutions that meet requirements; model the components of infrastructure and their points of integration; prove the feasibility of a design; create the design artifacts that are required to deliver and to maintain the infrastructure; guide a solution through to its completion; and ultimately to production support.

You are considered competitive for this position if you are:

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.
  • Experienced with AWS services such as AWS Glue, AWS Lambda, S3, and Redshift. The candidate should have hands-on skills in setting up and managing data pipelines, data integration, and ETL tasks using these services.
  • Excellent with follow-up and follow-through, ability to work independently, and make decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Customer-centric in your approach, with strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with faculty, staff, and eCornell departments.
  • Adaptable, flexible, and you exercise patience and curiosity in navigating complex issues, with a high level of confidentiality and good judgment.

What you will do:

  • Collaborate with business and technical resources to participate in the planning and requirement gathering phases, including estimate, develop, test and deliver quality BI solutions.
  • Design and development of integration architecture for BI and related data analytic solutions. This involves developing robust solutions using eCornell current and future infrastructure in conjunction with vendor based BI tools, using AWS Glue, Lambda, Redshift and Tableau.
  • Own the design, development and maintenance of ongoing data pipelines, metrics, jobs etc. to drive business decisions
  • Ensure data quality and integrity during the transformation process
  • Collaborate with data analysts and data scientists to understand data requirements
  • Monitor and optimize ETL processes for performance and cost efficiency
  • Troubleshoot and resolve ETL processes for performance and cost-efficiency
  • Maintain proper documentation for ETL processes and data flows

What you will need:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color.
  • Bachelor's degree in CS or equivalent and 5-7 years of relevant ETL work experience in a fast-paced development environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience with AWS solutions like Glue, Lambda, S3 and Redshift.
  • Experience in data mining, ETL etc. and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets.
  • 5+ years of experience delivering Business Intelligence solutions.
  • Proficient with SQL and data design.
  • Strong understanding of ETL concepts and data transformation.
  • Proficient in AWS Glue using PySPARK, AWS Lambda, AWS Redshift and Tableau.
  • Proven ability to work, be adaptive, and resourceful, in a dynamic, fast-paced, customer-focused work environment characterized by rapid change, minimal lead times, and multiple competing priorities.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication (written and oral) skills; expert interpersonal skills; ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with customers, stakeholders, and staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work independently and as part of a team, be adaptive to critical needs, and share expertise as needed, demonstrating accountability, openness, and transparency.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to stay current on new and emerging technologies.
  • Action and results oriented with a positive customer service attitude.

  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in CS or equivalent.
  • Experience in education technology.
  • Database technology: MS SQL Server, MySQL
  • Experience with Time series analysis and clustering
