This position reports to

Head of IP, US

Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide legal advice and guidance on matters related to Intellectual Property (IP) protection, enforcement, and licensing. Each day, you will act as a proactive and strategic business partner with a strong focus on quality, customers, and the company's best interest. You will also showcase your expertise by managing the trademark lifecycle and/or overseeing outside counsel in carrying out the same.

You will be mainly accountable for:
*Analyzing the technology transactions and negotiates terms and conditions, ensuring the organization's IP interests are protected.
*Implementing deep knowledge of applicable IP law, including evolving and complex fields of technology law.
*Supporting Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) transactions and divestitures by conducting IP legal/contract reviews for them.
*Conducting litigation and opposition proceedings in applicable geographies and collaborating with outside counsel to defend and/or enforce trademark rights.

Qualifications for the role
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA accredited law school and currently licensed to practice law in at least one US state with minimum 8 years experience
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Required Experience Includes: 8+ years of experience in the practice of IP law and IP processes, preferably with a mix of law firm and corporate (USPTO time considered), covering a variety of specialties, including patent drafting & prosecution, managing a patent portfolio, developing an IP strategy, drafting and negotiating complex IP agreements and terms, performing opinion work such as freedom to operate / risk assessments, and providing IP counseling generally.
  • Preferred Experience Includes: Moderate to strong experience providing IP support to strategic transactions such as M&A; Moderate to strong experience regarding open-source software (e.g., usage, licensing, contribution, compliance, risk reduction, company strategy/processes), ideally with experience analyzing some of the riskier open-source licenses such as GPL.
  • Bonus Experience Includes: supporting IP Litigation, e.g., working with outside counsel to address a range of litigation and conflict matters. Experience could include helping to coordinate early-stage investigation of claims, IP infringement analysis, understanding the stages of IP litigation, etc.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
