Minimum Requirements:



  • Education: High school plus additional course work (equivalent to up to 1 year at Community College or equivalent resulting in accumulation of similar knowledge and abilities).
  • Experience: 2-4 years' experience. Considerable previous experience required in the same or similar previous positions.
  • Physical Demands: Work requires heavy physical exertion and effort.


Licenses and Certifications:



  • Valid Arizona Class "D" Driver's license.
  • APWA Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII)

The purpose of this position is to provide technical advice and act as a lead to Public Works Inspectors. The Lead Engineering Inspector maintains project documentation, performs warranty inspections, and coordinates final inspection, project acceptance, and closeout. This role also involves performing a wide variety of advanced and specialized duties, providing technical guidance, and assisting the supervisor in assigning and monitoring work. The role requires assisting staff with complicated and difficult assignments.

Responsibilities Include:



  • Provides technical advice to Public Works Inspectors, including handling day-to-day scheduling of employee work coverage. Informs supervisors of project performance and provides general input on employee performance.
  • Identifies project needs; develops project scopes of various complexities, implements solutions through projects, and manages assigned staff and project teams.
  • Resolves complex problems and implements proactive, innovative, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Participates in the development of operational and capital improvement programs and budgets.
  • Coordinates construction projects and acts as a point of contact for interdepartmental and interagency coordination.
  • Responds to resident questions or complaints about projects.
  • Deals with conflicts between contractors and inspection staff.
  • Approves traffic control plans and assists in preparing inspection policies.
  • Oversees the inspection of contract work, ensuring compliance with Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) standards and other codes and regulations.
  • Reviews and interprets construction plans, provides quality assurance, and performs inspections related to water, sewer installations, grading and drainage, and more.
