For more information about the company and product line visit: sigsauer.com. Position Summary: The Packaging Engineer is responsible for developing packaging solutions for new and existing products. Responsibilities also include exercising sound engineering judgement and presenting analysis summaries which support design decisions. This position in the R&D Department is generally intended for engineers with a Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering and some relevant work experience. The Packaging Engineer works both independently and in a team environment with Marketing, Project Management, R&D, and external partners. A Packaging Engineer frequently initiates collaboration with other departments including product management and operations. FLSA: Exempt Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for creating innovative, efficient, cost-effective packaging designs for new and existing products.
- Collaborate with vendors and purchasing to determine costs and feasibility of packing options. Initiate purchase orders to procure prototypes for evaluation.
- Manage the various aspects of packaging development for many different products simultaneously, including tracking and prioritizing development tasks.
- Develop technical documentation, including package testing protocols and validations, for the qualification and release of product package systems.
- Follow project timelines and complete deliverables on time.
- Provide technical expertise for packaging risk assessments and failure mode/root cause analyses.
- Provide engineering support for existing packaging designs.
- Provide coordination of packaging documentation by interfacing with Marketing, R&D, Compliance, Legal, Quality, and other departments.
- Responsible for the accuracy of assemblies and BOMs, creating and tracking Change Orders in the PLM system.
- Follow all work/quality procedures to ensure quality system compliance and a high quality of work.
- Ensure compliance with Sig Sauer quality standards and industry standards, with solid documentation, process and procedures for packaging document creation, revision and overall document management.
- Engage in and actively volunteer for Continuous Improvement projects/tasks.
- Participate in and sustain 5S activities.
- Must follow all required ISO procedures, comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements, and adhere to SIG SAUER, Inc. security mandates.
- Must be able to travel infrequently.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Education/Experience & Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering.
- 2+ years of experience working as a Packaging Engineer is preferred.
- Must have experience managing and prioritizing multiple packaging projects simultaneously in an efficient and effective manner.
- Must have technical knowledge of packaging materials, formats, and processes.
- Must have a strong understanding of the manufacturing process for packing materials (paper, molded fiber, corrugated, rigid box, crates, cases, foam, plastic trays, etc.)
- Must have a working knowledge of product fragility, environmental protections, electrical protections, and package testing.
- Must be proficient in CAD modeling and drafting (SolidWorks and ArtiosCAD highly preferred).
- Must have basic proficiency with creative design software (Adobe Suite or equivalent).
- Experience developing packaging per Special Packaging Instructions (SPI) preferred.
- Must have experience using a PLM system (Agile preferred).
- Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Must be able to convey ideas and information clearly, concisely, and accurately to others, both verbally and in written form.
- Must be able to independently define and resolve complex problems by collecting and analyzing data, establishing facts, drawing valid conclusions, and executing viable solutions.
- Experience using and maintaining firearms and/or related products is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Working Conditions:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
- Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
