Mary Free Bed is a not-for-profit, nationally accredited rehabilitation hospital serving thousands of children and adults each year through inpatient, outpatient, sub-acute rehabilitation, orthotics and prosthetics and home and community programs. With the most comprehensive rehabilitation services in Michigan and an exclusive focus on rehabilitation, Mary Free Bed physicians, nurses and therapists help our patients achieve outstanding clinical outcomes. Position Overview:

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation System is seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Planning, Design, and Construction to lead our strategic initiatives in facility planning and development. This role will play a critical part in enhancing our rehabilitation services through the creation of innovative, patient-centered environments to Restore Hope & Freedom. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in healthcare planning and construction, a desire to innovate and challenge the status quo, and a proven track record of delivering complex high value projects.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement long-term planning and construction strategies and capital plans that align with the organization's goals and mission. Lead competitive processes for all PDC services to deliver high value and cutting-edge projects.
  • Project & Contract Management: Oversee all phases of facility planning and construction projects, from concept through completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Execute appropriate contracts and ensure compliance to terms and deliverables of all vendors.
  • Construction Management: Oversee the construction process, ensuring compliance with design specifications, safety standards, and quality control measures.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with senior leadership, clinical teams, architects, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure that design and construction initiatives meet the highest standards of care and compliance.
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage project budgets, financial forecasts, and reports, ensuring effective allocation of resources.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all planning and construction activities comply with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, as well as accreditation standards.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication: Engage with various stakeholders, including staff, patients, regulatory agencies, and community members, to gather input and ensure that projects reflect the needs of those we serve. Provide regular project updates and communication through meetings, site visits, written or verbal communication to stakeholders.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Incorporate sustainable design practices and innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.
  • Project Closeout and Delivery: Ensure that all projects include detailed as built drawings, maintenance and life cycle plans and project delivery includes appropriate orientation to operations, facilities, maintenance teams and vendors so assets are operated and maintained appropriately.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor project managers, consultants, stakeholders and owner's representatives to help deliver projects seamlessly and in alignment with the culture and mission of Mary Free Bed


Essential Qualifications:



  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field; Master's degree preferred. PMP preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare planning, design, and construction.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven leadership ability with experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and driving projects to successful completion.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of architectural design principles, construction practices, and project management methodologies.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to overcoming challenges.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Mastery of CAD software/technology with prior certification.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification.
