Title: Civics & Literacy Instructor

Reports To: Education Coordinator Pay: $51,292.80 up to $61,551.36 - Full-time, exempt position Office Hours: Monday - Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and Weekend hours are required. Description YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the Y of Greater Houston and seeks to meet the needs of Houston's significant refugee and immigrant communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. As a Civics Instructor, you will recruit legal permanent residents who seek to apply for naturalization. You will be responsible for providing placement testing, grading assignments, referring clients to the immigration department for naturalization application processing, and conducting outreach activities. Your ultimate goal is to assist clients in passing the citizenship test with USCIS.

Duties /Responsibilities


  • Teaching 16-20 hours of Civics classes per week to refugees, newcomers, and other vulnerable populations.
  • Impacting the lives of lawful permanent residents by teaching innovative classes at a variety of locations in the Greater Houston area.
  • Researching, customizing, and delivering engaging and culturally appropriate Civics curricula and assessments.
  • Assisting in the identification and recruitment of clients and managing referrals through community outreach.
  • Providing courses during the time of day when clients are available. This will include a Saturday class or evening hours.
  • Meeting requirements of grant including determining client eligibility and maintaining digital databases.
  • Completing required certifications and being familiar with updated resources.
  • Reporting suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Following mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
  • Meeting timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Examples include but are not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready for review and approval of time sheets.
  • Welcoming new refugees with occasional airport pick-ups and occasional food distribution.
  • Completing other duties as assigned.

Outcomes The Civics & Literacy Instructor is responsible for the following:


  • Serving and assessing a minimum of 300 students per year
  • Creating and maintaining documents in at least 300 applicant files.

Requirements


  • Degree in Education, TESOL, Adult Education, History, or Social Sciences (or related field)
  • Native-English speaker (preferred) with proficiency in an additional language
  • Valid Driver's License; clean driving record; reliable vehicle; and applicable auto insurance. This position requires frequent local travel.
