JOB TITLE:

Assistant Professor

JOB PURPOSE:

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Wyoming (UW) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track faculty position in Mathematics, with a specialization in Applied and Computational Mathematics, broadly defined. This position is set to begin August 2025.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job duties include teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to conduct high level research, obtain extramural funding, work collaboratively with other scientists, and teach a variety of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. A competitive startup and salary package will be provided to the successful candidate. Both teaching and research are important at the University of Wyoming. Successful tenure cases require dedication and proficiency in both areas.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Computational Mathematics
  • A demonstrated track record or evidence of potential for excellence in research
  • Evidence of ability to teach courses at the university level

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Evidence of potential for obtaining extramural funding
  • Previous experience or future plans for mentoring undergraduate/graduate students
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching courses at the university level
  • Excellent communication skills

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Review of applications begins on December 1st, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. A complete application will include the following documents:
  • A cover letter
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A research statement covering the candidate's achievements and future plans
  • A teaching statement describing how associated strategies, pedagogies, and successes will translate to departmental instruction
  • A list of at least four references (at least one of which should be able to address teaching)
  • Arrange for four of these references to email a copy of their reference letter to gauss@uwyo.edu .

About the Department

The Mathematics and Statistics Department has 30 faculty members, 22 of which are active researchers work on algebra, combinatorics, graph theory, convex analysis, operator algebras, ergodic theory, probability, harmonic analysis, numerical analysis, mathematical modeling, mathematical biology, scientific computing, machine learning, network analysis, math education, stochastic simulations, and statistics. The department is also home to 32 graduate students and maintains lively graduate programs in mathematics and statistics. The department is a part of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) of the University of Wyoming. This College includes 10 departments and the newly formed School of Computing. The College prides itself on research innovation, teaching excellence, industrial engagement, and broader societal impact. With a significantly increased budget, we have embarked on a transformational journey to become a Tier-1 Institution, recognized nationally for academic excellence and world-class research. This includes new state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated funding for research initiatives. We are hiring a cohort of new faculty across the College, and we seek to attract a diverse and inclusive group of talented early-stage faculty and established researchers.
