Position Summary:
University Hospital is the principal teaching hospital of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, and a regional resource for specialized services and critical care. University Hospital is a 519-bed academic medical center with an active medical staff of more than 785. University Hospital is home to northern New Jersey's only state-certified Level I Trauma Center, New Jersey Poison Information & Education System, and is a regional resource for advanced care in a wide range of medical specialties.
These specialty programs include an award-winning maternity program, the Center for Advanced Liver Diseases and Transplantation, a Comprehensive Stroke Center, advanced medical toxicology and addiction services, a comprehensive Weight Management Center and more.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Provision of comprehensive clinical pharmacy services for the ED and all associated care areas and clinical teams (e.g. pediatrics, trauma, stroke);
* Participation in direct patient care rounds and drug therapy management of medical emergencies (e.g., trauma, stroke, cardiac arrest, and overdose);
* Work collaboratively and cooperatively with pharmacy, emergency medicine leadership, patient care services, administration, IT, and others as required to ensure optimization of the medication use process and improve patient outcomes;
* Prospective evaluation of all medication therapy in medically complex patients in the ED for appropriate indications, dosage, medication interactions and allergies. Intervene as needed to optimize each patient's pharmacotherapeutic regimen for effectiveness, and prevent/monitor for ADEs;
* Serve as a resource for ED staff to facilitate proficient and accurate patient care, while demonstrating leadership and exceptional management skills. Serve as a liaison between the pharmacy and ED to support joint endeavors;
* Participate in medication reconciliation and give recommendations for formulary therapeutic substitution if required;
* Counsel patients on discharge medications. Educating patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers on the importance of compliance as well as beneficial lifestyle modifications;
* Prepare medications as needed in emergency situations in compliance with sterility and stability guidelines;
* Update and coordinate information concerning demographics, medication history, height and weight, allergy, renal function, etc. in each patient's chart;
* Develop and implement initiatives and clinical guidelines to ensure safe and cost-effective management of pharmaceuticals in collaboration with the healthcare team;
* Support emergency medicine residents for clinical project development and implementation, conference presentation, and manuscript preparation;
* Develop, implement and maintain advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) in emergency medicine;
* Participate as an active member on committees and projects as assigned both at UH and EMSOP;
* Participate in didactic teaching at EMSOP;
* Coordinate, select, and complete quality assurance and research projects in collaboration with the Department of Emergency Medicine;
* Participate in the education of other healthcare providers, including pharmacists and pharmacy staff, pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, physicians, medical residents, midlevel practitioners, nurses, and emergency medical support personnel;
* Work on a rotating schedule with other ED staff pharmacists to support and meet the operational needs of the Emergency Department;
* Understand and adhere to University Hospital's compliance standards as they appear in University Hospital's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy;
* Keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified;
* Serve as residency program liaison and preceptor for the pharmacy residency program, if/when applicable, and;
* Perform other related duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Director or ED Chief of Service.

Minimum Education and Experience
Applicants must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and have completed at least two (2) years of residency training or equivalent experience. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of New Jersey. Applicants without at least two years of post-graduate residency training must have at least three (3) years of experience as a clinical pharmacist in the specialty area of Emergency Medicine. Doctor of Pharmacy degree and at least two (2) years of residency training, including a PGY2 residency in Emergency Medicine or equivalent experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Board of Pharmacy Specialists certification in Pharmacotherapy ( BCPS) is encouraged.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Applicant will spend 50% of a typical day walking or standing and 50% sitting. Faculty will be required to talk or hear about 75% of the day and will use hands and fingers to write notes, enter information into a desktop, or laptop computer and assess patient vital signs.
