Technician II - Kroon Campos Lab

The Kroon Campos Lab (https://www.krooncamposlab.com/) seeks a highly motivated and organized technician. The candidate functions will include, but are not limited to ordering materials, lab organization, mosquito rearing, checking stocks, assisting with scientific data exploration, preparing cell plates and mosquitoes for research experiments, and helping maintain accurate records.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform mosquito colonies rearing, maintenance, and dissection
  • Assist in developing database and maintain standard laboratory records
  • Routine set-up, assembly and/or installation of components of portions of equipment; may conduct minor troubleshooting or make simple repairs as directed
  • Perform/ be able to perform a variety of tests, using both routine and special techniques and methods.
  • Adhere to and evaluate disease control and laboratory protocols; adhere to safety procedures
  • Assist with the inventory and ordering of supplies as directed

Required Qualifications

  • High school Diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • High level of initiative and accurate record keeping
  • Basic knowledge in data analyses using straightforward methods and software

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree in Biology, Microbiology, Entomology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or similar
  • Experience performing cell culture and plating cells for experiments
  • Experience rearing mosquitoes and dissecting
  • Ability to perform a variety of virological and molecular tests, such as PCR, RT-qPCR, ddPCR, cloning, IPs, WBs, IFA, microscopy, ELISA, flow cytometry, RNA analysis, PRNT, plaque assays, etc.
  • Experience working at biosafety levels 2 and/or 3
  • Experience working with different types of high throughput sequencing datasets, such as RNAseq, RIBOseq, MeRIPseq, direct RNA sequencing

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.

Who We Are:

The Kroon Campos Lab (https://www.krooncamposlab.com/) is part of The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Cornell University, which features a collaborative faculty dedicated to research on infectious diseases and host immune responses. Our lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms driving the emergence and re-emergence of single-stranded positive-sense RNA (ssRNA+) and zoonotic mosquito-borne viruses, including but not limited to alphaviruses and flaviviruses. We study virus-host interactions with the arthropod and vertebrate hosts at the molecular level. We aim to advance science and benefit society by conducting rigorous virology research, disseminating our findings, and training the next generation of scientists, which will benefit human and animal health.
