Job Summary

As part of the clinical team and under the direction of a Clinical Veterinarian, perform all aspects of basic equine farriery in accordance with accepted farrier practices, in a collegial manner. Perform therapeutic shoeing and trimming for a wide variety of clinical conditions as prescribed or directed by the Clinical Veterinarian. Instruct veterinary students and house officers in basic farriery.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a valid CA Driver's License.
  • No educational requirement.
  • At least 5 years experience as a practicing farrier.
  • Experience with routine and therapeutic shoeing on a variety of horses.
  • Experience working with and handling horses and livestock.
  • Skill to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, clinicians, students, and staff.
  • Skills to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in regard to basic care of large animal patients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Journeyman Farrier. American Farrier Association Certification.
  • Experience incorporating diagnostic imaging findings (X-ray, CT scan, etc.) into a therapeutic shoeing plan.
  • Basic computer skills.

Department Overview

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

The UC Davis Farrier Service plays a critical role in the Large Animal Clinic to provide farrier services to our Equine patients. This position is part of a dedicated team of clinicians, residents, staff and students who share a passion in providing clinical instruction as well as hands on training.

Work Environment

  • This position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages and holiday shifts).This position works under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers. Requires working with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gaseous anesthetics, zoonotic and infectious diseases, unpleasant odors and distraught clients.
