Within the surgical department, the surgical technician assists with nursing care and the surgical services under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and physician/surgeon.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS)Certification within 30 days of hire.

3. Completion of Surgical Technology Program

EXPERIENCE:

1. One year surgical technology experience

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Sets up for scheduled cases with needed supplies and instrumentation.

2. Assists in safe transport of patient to operating room and in proper positioning on OR table.

3. Adheres to national patient safety goals by confirming correctness of surgical site and procedure to be performed.

4. Follows steps of surgical scrubbing, proper donning of sterile gloves and gown; gowning and gloving surgeons and other personnel.

5. Assists in accounting procedure of instruments, sharps, and sponges, and other soft goods utilized during surgical procedures.

6. Identifies, prepares and correctly passes surgical instruments and sharps to and from surgeon.

7. Assists in cleanup of operating room: appropriately transport instruments, dispose of trash and linens, restocking supplies.

8. Familiar with and adheres to infection control policies and procedures.

9. Assists surgeon/physician with endoscopic procedures: proper patient positioning, gloving, cleaning/disinfecting of endoscopes, use of personal protective equipment.

10. Assists in decontamination of surgical instrumentation.

11. Monitors function of autoclave for sterilization of instrumentation.

12. Safeguards patient privacy and maintains confidentiality.

13. Stocks LDR/Triage Rooms.

14. Daily/Q Shift Checks.

15. Assists RN/Physician as needed/directed.

16. Obtains Vital Signs Q shift & PRN.

17. Assists with making Chart Packets, cleaning, emptying trash etc.

1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients, and limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds. All transfers, lifts and re-positioning will be completed utilizing the lift equipment and/or other patient handling aids as indicated by the patient's profile and appropriate algorithms.

2. Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
