Description & Requirements
The Controller's Office is seeking a highly motivated and dependable full time Senior Accountant to assist with accounting and reporting functions primarily focused on the Institute's investment (endowment) portfolio. A successful candidate will possess a proficient knowledge of accounting fundamentals, be highly organized, detail oriented and able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Past exposure to working with investments as it pertains to the not-for-profit industry would be a plus, but is not required.
In this role, you will also be responsible for the Institute's annual tax filings, such as the federal Form 990 and 990-T. Knowledge of tax compliance including experience preparing company tax returns is a desired skill. You will also make recommendations for improvements and efficiencies in processes and internal controls as well as have an opportunity to develop and grow your career over time.
This position has a hybrid work schedule, allowing for in office collaboration as well as flexibility with work from home days weekly.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accounting/Investments:
- Prepares journal entries for all investment transactions (contributions/distributions, gain/loss earnings, and transfers) and maintains roll forward schedules to track monthly investment activity of the Institute's $1B endowment portfolio.
- Responsible for calculating the net asset value of the Institute's endowment portfolio using a unitized methodology, including investments of the Institute's supporting organization.
- Ensures timely transfer of cash to investment managers as new endowment contributions are received, including any earned interest. Demonstrates understanding and application of the Institute's endowment spending policy.
- Calculates and ensures accuracy of historical investment returns across the Institute's endowment portfolio on an ongoing basis.
- Lead preparer of investment information, analytics and reports presented to the Finance and Investment Committees in advance of quarterly Board of Directors meetings. Works collaboratively with the Accounting Manager to prepare materials and prioritize responsibilities to ensure investment deliverables are completed timely.
- Prepares journal entries and maintains roll forward schedules for marketable securities held by the Institute from IPO through liquidation.
- Contributes to the development of process improvements surrounding investment accounting, including the implementation of investment software.
- Participates in key areas of the monthly financial close process relevant to investments, such as preparation of journal entries and reconciliation of accounts to ensure timely and accurate reporting on the general ledger.
- Assist with financial statement preparation and tie out as it relates to investments, such as flux analysis and cash flows.
- Opportunity to collaborate with teams across Finance, Enterprise Systems and leadership to conduct daily business operations and implement cross-functional process improvements.
- Provides support for the fiscal year-end audit and other duties as assigned.
Tax Compliance:
- Plays a major role in planning, preparation and review of the Institute's Form 990 and 990-T, including unrelated business income tax returns for 20+ states, in accordance with current tax laws and regulations.
- Collaborate with teams across the organization to compile, analyze and review detailed financial transactions for underlying tax schedules and leverage the financial system to generate information accurately and efficiently.
- Ensures required tax payments are made to regulatory agencies timely, and keeps detailed records for monitoring and reporting purposes.
- Reviews, researches and resolves tax notices from regulatory agencies related to annual tax filings. Responsible for organizing and maintaining historical records.
- Conducts research for tax issues as necessary and summarizes findings to management.
- Acts as a key liaison between the Institute and tax consultants during 990 planning and preparation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance or related field.
- At least 3 years of public accounting and/or private industry experience, preferably in a not-for-profit organization. Experience with investment/fund or endowment accounting in a not for profit or related industry is a plus.
- Experience with tax compliance; not for profit industry preferred.
- Experience with major enterprise-system software packages is a plus (SAP/Oracle)
- Proficient at Microsoft Excel skills (v-lookup, pivot tables etc.) and Google apps.
- Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Works independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong time management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
- Enjoys working in a fast-paced and challenging environment, and with all levels of institute personnel.
