This role is part of the Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance team. This team is focused on monitoring and assessing processes that guide Blue Origin's design, manufacturing, and operations, ensuring system safety engineering, environmental health, and safety, product integrity, and continuous improvement processes.

As part of a hard working team of diverse engineers with unique backgrounds you will be responsible for the development and management of system safety engineering processes and products for the design of crewed space vehicles. You must have a passion for human spaceflight, safety and mission assurance, a commitment to the fundamentals of system safety engineering, and a strong capacity to work collaboratively on complex and interesting new problems.

As a System Safety Engineer at Blue Origin, you will work with systems engineering teams to identify hazards, controls, and verify compliance with safety and reliability requirements. You will assess space system architectures for fault tolerance, reliability, and safety by means of hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA/FMECA). Experience with human rated space systems is desired. You will help engineers identify areas of opportunity for design improvements, minimize risk, and increase the probability of mission success. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implement and maintain system safety processes and identify continuous improvement opportunities

  • Train and coach engineers on identifying and analyzing system safety risks

  • Work with systems engineering and subsystem responsible engineers to identify and verify compliance with system safety requirements

  • Evaluate and perform reviews of system safety analyses including FHAs, PHAs, FMECAs, FTAs, and HEAs

  • Perform compliance assessment of our system safety processes and products against external standards including NPR 8705.2, NPR 8715.3, NASA/SP-2010-580, NASA/SP-2014-612, AFSPCMAN 91-710, FAA regulations, MIL-STD-882

  • Generate metrics and report on element system safety status

  • Participate in actively maintaining a healthy system safety culture

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.Sc. degree in aerospace engineering or related field

  • 8+ years engineering experience in the aerospace industry with 5+ years system safety or reliability engineering experience performing PHAs, FHAs, PSSAs or SHAs or SSHAs, FMEA/FMECAs, FTAs, & CCAs

  • Strong system safety and mission assurance fundamentals

  • Experience interpreting and assessing compliance to regulatory requirements and guidance

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to identify problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programs

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing system safety and/or reliability analyses on satellites or human-rated in-space systems.

  • Experience performing compliance assessment of system safety processes and products against external standards including Range Safety, NASA, FAA, MIL-STD-882, and ARP-4761.

  • Experience with certification of human-rated space systems.

  • Process ownership and maintenance experience

Compensation Range for:

CA applicants is $146,644.50-$205,302.30;CO applicants is $134,838.38-$188,773.73;WA applicants is $146,644.50-$205,302.30
