About the Department:

The Department of Religious Studies (https://religiousstudies.gmu.edu) is an interdisciplinary unit that offers an undergraduate major and minor in Religious Studies as well as minors in Islamic Studies and Judaic Studies. It also oversees a master's concentration in Religious Studies. The department embraces a wide range of scholarship and pedagogy that reflects cultural and religious diversity and contributes to a broader understanding of the religious dimension in a global context.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages (https://mcl.gmu.edu/about-the-department) is central to the multilingual and global community that distinguishes George Mason University. The Department offers a major and minor in many languages, including Korean. The Korean Studies Program (https://mcl.gmu.edu/about-the-department/korean) extends its academic scope and students' learning by engaging in transnational collaboration with Mason Korea (https://masonkorea.gmu.edu), other units of the university, and local Korean American communities.

About the Position:

George Mason University's Department of Religious Studies and Department of Modern and Classical Languages invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position to start in August 2025.

Responsibilities:

Research



  • Maintains a research agenda and publication record at a rate appropriate for eventual tenure and promotion at an R1 university.


Teaching



  • Teaches courses in English in the Department of Religious Studies and in Korean in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages; and
  • Mentors and supervises undergraduate and graduate student researchers.


Service



  • Provides service to departments and the college and university by participation on faculty committees.


Required Qualifications:



  • Terminal degree in a related field;
  • Ph.D. in Religious Studies or closely-related field with a specialization in religious studies by time of appointment;
  • Scholarship must focus on Korean religion and demonstrate methodological innovation and engagement with comparative, contemporary, and interdisciplinary perspectives;
  • Must possess an emerging record of quality published research;
  • Demonstrate potential for excellent teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and
  • Ability to teach courses in Korean Studies in the Korean language.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Active research agenda supported by a record of internal or external funding;
  • Publication record that includes peer-reviewed journal articles or chapters that demonstrate scholarly excellence and interdisciplinary perspectives;
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching; and
  • Prior experience with academic programming.
