PURPOSE

Constructs, erects and repairs wood based structures using carpentry tools and knowledge of carpentry practices and methods. Coordinates and oversees the activities of carpentry workers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Constructs, erects, and repairs wooden structures such as houses, barns, commercial buildings, garages and similar structures; reads blueprints or sketches or from verbal instructions determines sequence of activities concerned with fabrication, assembly and erection of structure.
  • Selects and orders delivery of materials and structural units, such as lumber, prefabricated doors, cabinets, and paneling to meet specifications for the construction project for use by a team of carpentry workers.
  • Understands local building codes to ensure that structures comply with structural, safety and other regulatory requirements.
  • Assigns workers to such tasks as cutting material to size, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework and laying flooring.
  • Performs advanced carpentry tasks such as installing doors and windows, building stairs and laying hardwood floors.
  • Inspects work performed by subcontractors, including ductwork, wiring and pipe installation to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Ensures that work area is kept neat and orderly and that premises are cleaned and debris is appropriately disposed at the end of the work shift.
  • Performs job tracking and reporting, overseeing the efficiency and output of construction team.
  • Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices in order to prevent injury to self or co-workers; attends periodic safety meetings as required; may recommend changes to improve safety procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.


COMPETENCIES




  • Advanced knowledge of company products
  • Advanced knowledge of carpentry and construction techniques and use of hand and power tools to perform tasks
  • Knowledge of building codes
  • Ability to plan and coordinate work processes to maintain and increase manpower and equipment efficiency
  • Communication skills sufficient to speak before teams and work groups to explain work rules, product standards and productivity goals
  • Ability to read and write blueprints, schematics and design documents
  • Working knowledge of other construction trades such as plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilating
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and component design documents
  • Knowledge of basic math, counting and estimating
  • Valid driver's license



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) four (4) years of industry experience performing carpentry duties; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Work is performed within a construction environment, subject to temperature variations, hazardous chemicals, mechanical parts, equipment noise and dust.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and on occasion up to 80 pounds.
  • May be required to perform specific tasks that involve climbing, lifting, pushing, crawling, stooping or kneeling.
