Job Summary

Central Washington University is recruiting an Academic Advisor to join our Advising team in Ellensburg, Washington. This recruitment will be used to establish a pool of applicants that will be continuously screened on an as-needed basis. This role is an important member of our team as they support students' educational journey within the University. The role is a campus-based position, which means you get to see the lives you are impacting. We're offering a salary, depending on experience, from $48,000 - $53,000 annually plus the awesome CWU benefits.

The Role:

This position provides academic advising, major exploration, and degree planning support to students at CWU. Academic advisors also provide outreach to students on academic warning, probation, and/or with academic alerts, and who are late to enroll for classes. This position plays a vital role in Student Success at CWU and shares the responsibility with faculty and staff to help facilitate strong rates of degree attainment and student retention. All employees are expected to support CWU's commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

  • College of Arts and Humanities
  • College of Business
  • College of Education and Professional Studies
  • College of the Sciences
  • William O.Douglas Honors College
Job Duties

Academic Advising
- Advise students about academic requirements and accessing resources to plan and assist with degree completion
- Counsel students about majors and minors, providing interventions and/or referrals as necessary
- Advise prospective and incoming first-year students and transfer students
- Maintain a consistent pattern of contact to encourage a trusting relationship through multiple channels of communication
- Encourage students to make informed academic decisions and develop individualized academic plans
- Assist students with course articulation, and recommend appropriate academic course loads and course selections
- Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts, and placement results, as well as university policy and procedures
- Provide outreach to and assist students on academic warning, probation, and/or with academic alerts, to develop an academic success plan
- Maintain up-to-date Advisor Notes, documenting student participation and progress
- Design and deliver presentations to various audiences

Campus Partnerships
- Collaborate with the other advising areas, academic departments, and other university offices (e.g., Career Services)
- Support First Year Experience programs and Orientations where academic advising is concerned, providing information and support to new students

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written communication, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working collaboratively with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and experiences
  • Demonstrated ability to use Word, Excel, email and/or similar software applications to produce professional written correspondence, create and maintain spreadsheets, and receive and respond to email inquiries, tasks, etc
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to accomplish tasks and projects
  • OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in college student development, counseling, or related field
  • Knowledge of student development theories and best practices in academic advising
  • Demonstrated participation in programs designed to promote inclusion
  • Experience or interest in mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds
  • Ability to incorporate multicultural perspectives and issues into everyday conversations
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students through various activities

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: This position has a minimum annual salary of $45,303 and maximum annual salary of $63,424. The Hiring Department's expected hiring range is $48,000 - $53,000. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the hiring range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch)

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
