The Scientific Writer is responsible for working with The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) faculty, staff scientists, and trainees to prepare grant applications and other scientific communication materials on a wide range of research topics. Responsibilities include editing and proofreading of single-investigator grant proposals, scientific manuscripts for peer review, trainee fellowships, and other scientific documents. The Scientific Writer may also support editing and primary writing for complex and/or multi-investigator proposals managed by more senior members of the Research Program Development (RPD) team.

This position is well suited to individuals with significant research experience (MS or PhD level) and excellent scientific writing and editorial skills, but without significant proposal development experience. This individual must be capable of working independently and collaboratively with investigators and research administrative personnel, and must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Provides advice on grantsmanship, editorial support, and standardized language for administrative sections of scientific applications.
  • Edits scientific proposals for persuasive language, content, form, clarity, grammar, and alignment with agency and funding announcement objectives.
  • Structures and formats proposals ensuring that the application meets the requested details of the solicitation, and supports the development of narratives in coordination with faculty and researchers.
  • Advises on (and develops) graphics for proposals where appropriate.
  • Edits technical manuscripts, fellowship applications, clinical research protocols and other research communications materials written by faculty, scientific staff and/or trainees.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of the RPD mission and needs of the JAX community.

Other knowledge, skills and abilities:

Required:

* Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact positively and professionally with faculty, scientific staff and trainees at all levels of seniority.

* Ability to grasp complicated technical subjects, synthesize diverse lines of evidence and apply these abilities to technical writing.

* Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat applications.

* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

* Ability to meet hard deadlines and work well under pressure.

Preferred:

* Graphics expertise using Illustrator, Photoshop, Biorender or related platforms.

* Experience using file-sharing platforms (Dropbox, Box, OneDrive).

* Previous experience with technical writing of manuscripts, fellowships and/or grants.

Salary Range: $59,249 - $102,174

Education required: Master's Degree

Education preferred: Doctorate Degree

Experience required: 0-2 years
