Responsible for mapping out and measuring features of the Earth's surface. Establishes land, air, and water boundaries for airports, the creation of legal documents, and for property assessment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plot out maps to establish land, airspace, and water boundaries.
  • Write descriptions of land for deeds, leases, and other legal documents.
  • Map out airspace for airports.
  • Take measurements of construction sites.
  • Ascertain boundaries for mineral sites.
  • Provide information on the shape, contour, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features.
  • Collect data and make calculations.
  • Map geographic information using data from surveys and other resources.
  • Measure distances, angles, and directions on Earth's surface.
  • Pinpoint reference points on surveys.
  • Determine precise location of features.
  • Use specialized equipment in survey area.
  • Research legal records.
  • Analyze previous boundaries.
  • Determine location for new boundaries.
  • Provide expert testimony in court regarding their work for legal cases.
  • Record, verify, and analyze results.
  • Prepare plots and reports.
  • Construct maps.
  • Use satellite observations to measure large areas of the earth's surface.
  • Mark sites for subsurface explorations.
  • Search for places where petroleum might be extracted.
  • Survey rivers and other bodies of water to determine shorelines and water depth.
