Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Scientist. We are seeking a candidate to join our team at the PlayReadVIP National Center in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Our group, based in Manhattan, delivers and studies parenting programs designed to improve child development outcomes in under-resourced populations (led by PI Alan Mendelsohn, MD; playreadvip.org). The candidate will be responsible for multiple research/project tasks and will work with a multidisciplinary team of pediatricians, psychologists, and others. In particular, this candidate will be responsible for leading adaptations of our parent education program, PlayReadVIP, for new populations, settings, cultures, languages, and needs. This involves development and documentation of adaptations, utilization of implementation-science frameworks, evaluation, dissemination, project management, and coordination with other project-specific staff.

Candidates will be based in Manhattan but will be expected to regularly spend time at other local sites in NYC. There may be some occasional travel required to locations outside of NYC.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Developing and overseeing centralized processes and protocols for adaptations.
  • Evaluating and updating PlayReadVIP materials and curriculum to ensure inclusivity and sensitivity for use across diverse populations of participants.
  • Engaging in piloting, program evaluation, and formal research on adaptations, including research design, data collection, documentation, and analysis of findings.
  • Literature reviews and prospective research on parenting and program development in diverse cultures and settings, and on implementation and adaptation of best practices and models.
  • Dissemination of findings and protocols through publications, presentations, and trainings.
  • Assistance with other operational aspects of the program and evaluation.
  • Monitoring and tracking of fidelity of program with adapted models.
  • Engaging directly with community members, including developing and leading focus groups, surveys, and needs assessments.

Project Management:

  • Creating and maintaining project timelines, managing project to-do's and deliverables.
  • Scheduling, organizing, and leading meetings.
  • Communicating with principal investigators, co-investigators, collaborators and staff.
  • Supervising and providing mentorship to research assistants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Support for contracting, budgeting, spending tracking, and reporting for projects related to adaptations, and support on additional regulatory tasks such as IRB and human subject issues.
  • Performing broader administrative tasks related to adaptations projects.
    • Supporting other ongoing projects in the lab.

Minimum Qualifications:

MA required, with sufficient relevant experience. Previous experience with program adaptation work and/or research or program delivery experience with diverse populations and cultures. 2 to 4 years of research experience, and previous experience supervising employees, students, or volunteers. Proficiency with database and statistical software (for example, Microsoft Excel, SPSS, R, STATA, REDCap, SQL), and experience in statistical design and analysis. Excellent leadership skills, organizational skills, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work well independently and collaboratively on complex tasks and to lead junior staff in the conduct of research.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD strongly preferred, in developmental psychology, implementation science, education, epidemiology, public health, or related field. Demonstrated interest in early child development, parenting, program implementation, program adaptation, cross-cultural differences in parenting, education, and/or public health. Proficiency in Spanish or another language spoken frequently in New York City preferred but not required.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
