Position overview
Position title: SCIPP Specialist (Junior Specialist - Associate Specialist Ranks) Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see section D. Qualifications of the CAPM 602.230 Specialist Series). A reasonable estimate for this position is an annual salary between $53,100 - $85,000. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment (see the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year). "Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Percent time:
Full-time (100%), but occasionally initial appointments may be less than full-time based on the unit's research need and/or availability of funding. Anticipated start:
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's research need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in December 2024 through December 2025. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment. Position duration:
Initial appointments are typically for a period of one year, but in some cases may be for a shorter period of time based on the unit's research need and/or availability of funding. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding. Application Window Open date: November 1, 2024 Next review date: Monday, Dec 2, 2024 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Final date: Friday, Oct 31, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Position description The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of SCIPP Specialists, with duties similar to that of technician or engineer in the industrial sector. SCIPP is a pioneer in the development of silicon detectors for elementary particles with expertise in both silicon micro-strip and pixel detectors and fast timing detectors, as well as radiation tolerant readout electronics for such detector systems. Some of the major projects in which SCIPP is presently involved include the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, particularly the upgrade of ATLAS for the High Luminosity operation; the ePIC nuclear physics experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory; the development of advanced sensors for fast timing and high repetition-rate applications; and microelectrode array systems for neurobiology. Under the direction of the SCIPP director and a designated SCIPP research scientist (see our current list of SCIPP research scientists), the specialists will contribute technical skills to make scientific and scholarly contributions to SCIPP research projects by assisting with instrumentation development and production; implementing and monitoring safe laboratory practices; fostering collaborative relationships with other scientists and agencies; and contributing to technical publications, presentations, and/or reports. Appointments will be made at the Junior Specialist , Assistant Specialist, and Associate Specialist ranks depending on the candidate's education, qualifications, and years of research experience.
