West Virginia University (WVU) is seeking an energetic and visionary leader with strong academic credentials and leadership skills to serve as the Program Director for the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) programs at West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV. Inclusive of an undergraduate degree (BS) in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics with an emphasis in Medical Laboratory Science and a graduate degree (MS) in Medical Laboratory Science, the Medical Laboratory Science programs are committed to innovation and excellence in our efforts to fulfill the WVU land grant mission of addressing the healthcare needs of West Virginia citizens.

The MLS programs are housed administratively within the School of Medicine's Department of Pathology, Anatomy and Laboratory Medicine (PALM) and structurally within the School of Medicine's Health Professions unit. The MLS Program Director reports directly to the PALM Department Chair, with an additional reporting relationship to the Vice Dean of Health Professions. The Health Professions unit - which is home to over 1,500 students enrolled in diverse undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs - also provides administrative and student support in the areas of enrollment management, advising, and clinical education.

The Program Director will serve as leader and chief administrator of the academic programs and as such will supervise MLS staff and faculty, including the promotion and tenure process; mentorship and employee/faculty development; and workload assignment. In partnership with the Health Professions student services unit, the Program Director will oversee all aspects of enrollment management, student success, and graduation, including recruitment and admissions; student advising; coordination of clinical placements; departmental scholarships; and bridging ceremonies/graduation. Additionally, the Program Director will be responsible for all activities related to programmatic accreditation; ongoing program planning and assessment; curriculum review and development; course scheduling; and other related matters.

The candidate should demonstrate the ability to sustain a positive working environment and meet high standards for excellence in education, scholarship, and service. Specifically, the Program Director must meet the following criteria by time of appointment:


Qualifications

  • Education:

    • Hold a PhD or EdD degree.
    • Hold an earned bachelor's or master's degree in MLS or a closely related field.
    • Note: at least one degree relevant to the application must be earned from a NAACLS-accredited MLS program.


  • Three to five (3 - 5) years clinical or relevant laboratory experience.
  • Three (3) years teaching experience.
  • Hold at least one relevant ASCP-BOC or ASCPi-BOC generalist certification (e.g.,
    MLS(ASCP)).
  • Demonstrate the ability to promote positive working relationships, characterized by cultural competence and the ability to sustain and develop relations with clinical sites and interprofessional partners.


Given the position responsibilities indicated above, a track record of success in some or all of the following areas is highly preferred:



  • Implementation of innovative and successful recruitment and/or retention initiatives
  • Curriculum development
  • Implementation of innovative teaching models
  • Development of clinical partnerships
  • Faculty and staff mentorship/supervision
  • Experience in successfully obtaining extramural programmatic funding
  • Academic leadership and/or Demonstrated leadership in professional organizations.
