DESCRIPTION

With general supervision, the incumbent provides crucial advising and other vital services at the International Services and Engagement Office (ISEO) to international students and their dependents at UC San Diego, so they can maintain their legal non-immigrant status. Serve as primary contact for walk-ins (in person and virtual), receive and assist visitors, answer incoming calls from international students seeking services, offer information and advice about international services and programs, set appointments for in-depth advising, and make referrals to other appropriate offices as needed.

Utilizing specialized knowledge of federal regulations concerning international students, assist with campus compliance by updating international student records with required information gathered from various sources and entering important details into electronic database. Update international student information in the iServices (Sunapsis) with attention to detail and complete accuracy.

Develop fliers, handouts, and other information materials to educate international students about ISEO programs. Coordinate and implement website updates in collaboration with other advisors and technical support personnel. Work closely with the staff to keep forms and procedures up-to-date.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, psychology, or related field and 1-3 years of experience related to student advising activities in an academic setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Skill and ability in counseling and advising techniques, including active listening, interviewing, referral, and basic crisis intervention with a demonstrated knowledge of theories and principles including an understanding of their appropriate use in a higher education setting.

  • Demonstrated skill in using standard office computer technology including internet and web-based systems, Microsoft Office suite, and administrative computing systems, with the willingness and ability to update and keep those skills current.

  • Experience in using specialized software (such as ISSM, ISIS, Adobe PDF, Filemaker Pro) and using social media (such as Facebook and Twitter) as an effective marketing and outreach tool.

  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Knowledge of campus resources (i.e., academic programs, housing offices, student health services, career services, counseling services, etc.).

  • Understanding of University rules and regulations.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to work with a diverse population at all levels of the organization including faculty, staff, senior management, students, and representatives from external organizations with proven ability to work as part of a cohesive team with co-workers and clients. Proven sensitivity to cultural differences and communication with persons who speak English as a second language. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and language proficiency levels.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking.

  • Proven organizational ability to prioritize tasks and produce timely results in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities using initiative, sound judgement, and independent thought while maintaining a high level of professionalism, precise attention to detail, and accuracy.

  • Analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems, recommend solutions, and determine and implement procedures to accomplish effective resolution and evaluate results/progress. Experience with independently researching, compiling, organizing, and interpreting data and materials from various sources.

  • Effective writing skills in order to formulate and present written material in a logical and comprehensive manner. Excellent English language skills including grammar, spelling, and punctuation with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively on the phone or in person with a variety of individuals of diverse cultural and language backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in establishing objectives, setting priorities, and working with others in support of departmental objectives and goals.

  • Proven experience with office administrative procedures to include, but not limited to, cash handling, multi-line phones, effectively organizing computerized files and information, and developing, implementing, and maintaining record keeping and filing systems.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,800 - $91,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.77 - $43.58

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
