2nd Shift Security Officer 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Summary: Provides a visual, unarmed security presence to preserve the safety and security of Garden staff/visitors and properties by: patrolling Garden buildings, grounds and parking lots; conducting inspections; and manning assigned posts. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Security Officer is required to work scheduled shift at all times, in all conditions.
- Acts as First Responder to medical emergencies, administers First Aid/CPR/AED as needed.
- Utilizes Garden's IRIMS system to generate necessary detailed reports, including accident reports and near-misses, Lights Out (Garden and Street), Inclement Weather Log, and MSD Drainage reports.
- Responds to Garden fire and burglar alarms and investigates causes of the alarm. Clears and secures the scene quickly ensuring the safety of visitors, staff and volunteers. Assists emergency personnel (STL Fire Department and/or STL Police Department) as needed.
- Assists with directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic, as well as crowd control on Garden grounds.
- Monitors weather conditions and takes action to ensure the safety of visitors, staff,
volunteers and Garden property.
- Performs wand tours; patrols premises and conducts ground inspections on foot, bike, Segway, and using other Garden vehicles (i.e., golf carts, etc.) to maintain order and secure buildings (i.e., windows, doors, gates, etc.).
- Identifies safety concerns and initiates corrective action.
- Conducts periodic alarm testing for elevator, fire, security and other equipment as directed in accordance with required standards.
- Monitors the Garden's energy management system when performing duties as Taylor Officer, paying special attention to greenhouse temperatures from September through May. When assigned the greenhouse as part of responsibility, must perform visual inspection of temperatures in greenhouse to verify that the temperatures are within range and if out of range, take immediate action by contacting HVAC individual on duty or on call.
- Provides customer service, including motor vehicle assistance, to visitors, volunteers and employees (i.e. giving directions to other area attractions, greets public for weddings, parties, etc.).
- Transports employees in Garden-owned motor vehicle to other campus buildings/parking lots as needed; provides personal protection; accompanies employees to their parked vehicles or other specified locations after standard operating hours.
- Detects and reports to supervisor any suspicious activities/actions which may be a threat to employees, visitors, volunteers, Garden property, etc.; prepares and submits daily electronic and written reports as required.
- Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
- Accepts all lost and found items and writes information in the appropriate department log.
- Allows only authorized staff to enter facilities and prevents unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Opens and closes facilities daily, ensuring the employees, volunteers and visitors have left the premises.
- Reports security breaches utilizing established procedures to supervisor or local law enforcement officials and assist them as directed or needed.
- Reports general maintenance concerns in accordance with established guidelines (i.e. broken locks, unlit emergency exit signs, broken glass, water leaks, etc.) utilizing the TMA system.
- Responsible for transporting sensitive property to various locations as directed.
- Promotes and maintains an environment that fosters trust, open communication, and teamwork, works effectively with other Garden departments and external organizations to accomplish goals and identify and resolve problems; reports issues to supervisor which cannot be resolved; maintains confidential information.
- Actively participates in Garden safety initiatives as necessary; adheres to all health and safety guidelines; prioritizes safety in fulfilling all assignments; provides continuous education to employees, visitors, volunteers regarding Garden policies/procedures.
- May provide front desk support as needed; answers telephones; performs light administrative tasks; and monitors video surveillance cameras.

Qualifications/Experience:
- Minimum 2-3 years' experience as a security guard required; public venue experience a plus.
- Scheduling flexibility that allows working a rotated schedule, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to identify suspicious characters, movements and dangerous situations. Must always be alert and ready to deal with security emergencies.
- Ability to ask questions in ways that enhance the clarity, quality, and reliability of information; maintains confidentiality.
- Proven ability to maintain a calm demeanor when handling routine and crisis situations; poised, professional, self-confident, friendly attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively/clearly at all levels; must enjoy and feel comfortable interacting and working in close proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner, answering questions regarding the Garden and its operations.
- Demonstrates highest level of professional and ethical conduct; knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record (prior to employment).
- Ability to obtain and maintain the following licenses within (2) months of hire date is required: valid chauffeur's and security officer's licenses (St. Louis City or County).
- Ability to obtain the following certifications within (2) months of hire date and renew annually is required: American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and the Garden's Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e., step stool, climb ladder, etc.).
- Ability to wear personal, protective equipment.
- Must be able to work outdoors year-round.
- Ability to do considerable standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-ability to walk up to 90 minutes a stretch, 2-3 times per shift; 85% or more of the workday is standing on feet to patrol the premises.
- Ability to wear Garden-issued Personal Protective Equipment to complete tasks as needed.
- Ability to effectively utilize computer keyboard (typing).
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
- Ability to endure all weather conditions/extreme temperature variations for extended periods of time when performing ground patrols, assisting employees, volunteers, and visitors (i.e., in temperatures over 100F as well as temperatures below 0F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed; indoors/ building areas).
- Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner, answering questions regarding the Garden and its operations.
- Ability to drive/ride in Garden motor vehicle transporting employees to other campus buildings/parking lots as needed for up to (8) hours daily for several weeks.
