DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

POSITION OVERVIEW

As a Marine Electrician, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of shipboard electrical and electronic systems. Working under the direction of the Chief Engineer, you will ensure that our research vessels remain fully operational and prepared for each mission.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment.

  • Performing Oiler duties or Oiler watchstanding, as needed.

  • Standing security watches in port.

  • Participating in the vessel's safety management program and assisting with emergency procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school education and / or equivalent such as a GED.

  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) with Oiler and Electrician endorsement.

  • Proven skills as an electrician, especially in area of trouble shooting, new installations, and upkeep of existing equipment. Demonstrated knowledge and experience to identify all marine electrical / electronic equipment.

  • Experience reading blue prints and electrical / electronic schematics of all electrical and electronic equipment on board.

  • Thorough knowledge of seamanship practices, general shipboard maintenance and care, operation of deck equipment. Includes, but is not limited to: knots, line-handling, preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of winches, etc.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience to identify all marine electrical/electronic equipment and its condition to justify maintenance or replacement.

  • Demonstrated skills as an Oiler including familiarity with a variety of engine room related equipment, including experience accurately reading gauges for oil, fuel and water levels, temperatures and pressures.

  • Thorough knowledge of and familiarity with federal regulations relevant to maritime operations and international regulations.

  • Proven ability to use standard office software applications, inventory and database management systems.

  • Experience keeping records, including inventory of spare parts as required.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with diverse ship board personnel.

  • Critical thinking skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Demonstrated basic math skills that include the ability to add, subtract, multiply, perform percentage calculations, fractions, decimals with or without a calculator or computer.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time

  • Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol pre-employment screening and post-employment random testing

  • Unexpired U.S. Passport

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $79,400 - $115,656 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $38.03 - $55.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
