I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Carries out suicide risk assessments and interventions and provides psychosocial history and mental status assessment of patients at the University Campus and mobiles to off-site locations.

2. Conducts screening for a variety of behavioral health behaviors, conducts brief interventions, motivational interviewing, and refers patients to appropriate resources for education and or treatment.

3. Assists with research related project management. Collects research data and deploys research protocols. Engages in research related activities, including collecting data, managing projects, and providing research related interventions.

4. Participates in the evaluation of health and education programs including wellness, nutrition, physical fitness, tobacco and unintentional injuries.

5. Engages patients as appropriate in support activities relating to behavioral and necessary primary care.

6. Works collaboratively with providers including, but not limited to, physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health care professionals.

7. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; develops logical scope and sequence plans for providing health education programs.

8. Acts as a resource person in health education; applies appropriate research principles in health education.

9. Assists in the evaluation of utilization and impact of the BHS.

10. Assists in identifying additional resources for referrals and patient educational resources when necessary.

11. Adheres to UMass Memorial compliance policy, departmental guidelines/policies and all applicable laws and regulations.

2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.

3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.

4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1. Equivalent to a high school plus two years of college, technical training school, or related healthcare experience.

Preferred:

1. Bachelor's degree.

2. Licensed mental health counselor, social worker or substance abuse counselor.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

1. Knowledge of the human services field.

2. Knowledge and experience using the current DSM and/or ICD codes.

3. Data compilation and analysis skills.

4. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients, hospital staff and co-workers from diverse backgrounds.

5. Excellent written and communication skills.

Preferred:

1. Experience within a substance abuse treatment environment.

2. Experience in a healthcare or related field.

3. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

4. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.

5. Ability to work with people in a demanding environment with high patient flow.

6. Must be able to work independently, communicate medical information and perform health interventions in a clinical setting.

7. Experience using electronic health record, Microsoft Office products, and computers.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
