Summary: Performs carpentry projects to include construction, maintenance, repair, or replacement of interior and exterior surfaces and components of Shaw Nature Reserve buildings, structures and features. Work may involve both modern and historic buildings. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs and maintains wooden surfaces including, but not limited to, roofs, siding, trellises, pergolas, boardwalks, decks, handrails, outdoor furniture, benches and other features as per SNR or Garden specifications.
- Designs and constructs special projects including, but not limited to, new donated items and plaques.
- Constructs, maintains, repairs, or replaces interior finish work including drywall, plaster, paneling, flooring, and trim work.
- Installs and repairs general office furnishings including office furniture and room modifications, workstations, walls, plaques and signage, window treatment, shelving, pictures, ceilings, etc.
- Actively participates in the setup of special events and exhibits, as assigned
- Maintains inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Assists with special projects, on occasion and as needed, at the Butterfly House in Chesterfield and the main campus of the Missouri Botanical Garden in Saint Louis.
- Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed, including but not limited to: inform employees, students, and volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices when applicable, and routinely monitor to enforce them. Report all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately. Adapt or modify work methods to reduce hazards.
- Meets expected attendance guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. However, at times, individual may monitor and direct job duties for contractors working on site and/or other garden staff and volunteers assigned to assist with projects and events. Core Competencies

Qualifications/Experience:
- Four (4) years carpentry experience with knowledge of construction methods and materials.
- Knowledge of construction methods of historic and contemporary building and structures, construction methods and principles; willingness to keep up with changes in the industry.
- General knowledge of building codes and building permit requirements.
- Ability to safely operate a wide variety of tools including table saws, pneumatics, drills and other hand tools.
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations related to wearing PPE (personal protective equipment) and working on raised surfaces, including roof, scaffolding and ladders.
- Ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels; ability to interact and work in close proximity to general public in a safe and friendly manner.

Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Computer Skills:
- Ability to use Internet to search for new products and/or methods and to obtain manufactures' literature and required material safety data sheets (MSDS).
- Ability to close out work orders using TMA and to keep electronic records a plus.
- Familiarity navigating through various PC applications including, but not restricted to Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Outlook, Word, etc.).
Language Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written).
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information to effectively execute and achieve results.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to effectively perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals.
- Ability to utilize geometry for construction or repair projects.

- Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean insurable driving record (prior to employment).
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (i.e., load, unload and move supplies, medium to heavy weight tools and equipment) and work with various pieces of equipment off ladders and/or lifts and overhead.
- Ability to work at varying heights, on and around glass structures, both indoor and outdoor and to operate various types of lift equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time during all seasons of the year.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including fall restraint.
- Requires clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to bring objects into sharp focus.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-- 95% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
- Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing).
Work Environment:
- Work may be performed in maintenance shop, finished spaces or in and around general construction conditions.
- Work is performed at varying heights, around energized and moving equipment, and in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- Some tasks may be performed in confined spaces.
- Work is performed using saws and other moving equipment which may generate dust and noise.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100F as well as temperatures below 0F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
- Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.
