DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Staff Research Associate will be responsible for undertaking research projects in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) in making innovative contributions pertaining to research and experiments.

The Staff Research Associate will carry out independent research on T cell homeostasis, memory T cell formation, and survival in the mouse. Incumbent will independently operate, manage and provide training for the lab in-flow cytometry and cell sorting capabilities for various PIs within the School of Biological Sciences; run fluorescence-activated cell sort (FACS) and in-vitro assays in the evaluation and analysis of T cell responses; and supervise antibody production, maintenance, and propagation of selected mouse lines based on genotype determination. Generate T cells with various mutations via gene editing, generate scRNAseq and perturb-seq screens, and study T cell function in response to infection or tumors.

Additionally, the incumbent will independently generate data, analyze results, and present results at lab meetings. Participate in writing and publishing manuscripts in international journals. This position is also responsible for organizing and maintaining the lab. The incumbent will train and manage undergraduate, graduate, and other laboratory staff, and assist others in their experiments. May also perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced theoretical and sophisticated practical experimental knowledge of cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and immunology acquired through a Bachelors degree in related field and an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's or PhD in related field preferred.

  • Extensive demonstrated experience, skill and knowledge in successfully carrying out independent research in cell biology, imaging, molecular biology and biochemistry. Experience with mouse models of infection and tumors, histology, 10+ color flow cytometry.

  • Detailed conceptual/theoretical and practical understanding of and ability to perform miniprep DNA isolation, large scale plasmid DNA isolation, recombinant DNA techniques, PCR, in vitro transcription, agarose gel electrophoresis, Western & Northern blotting, protein purification, antibody generation, immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, analysis of phenotypes by cell imaging.

  • Experience culturing tumor and mammalian T cells.

  • Demonstrated experience writing manuscripts based on research projects, including excellent scientific writing & presentation development skills for presenting data to a formal audience.

  • Theoretical and sophisticated practical experimental knowledge of current literature in field of phosphoinositide biology, membrane homeostasis and cellular genetic techniques

  • Skill and knowledge to conduct research independently, requiring direction but not supervision by the principal investigator.

  • Proven ability to manage, train and provide work direction to other lab personnel and rotations students.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer programs for DNA & protein analyses, computer Image processing software like CellProfiler, ImageJ and Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Knowledge of and skill to purchase and maintain lab equipment and computers including microscopes and supplies for cell culture room.

  • Knowledge of lab safety requirements and procedures, hazardous materials disposal, and skill to train others in these procedures/requirements. Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precaution including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Skill to organize set up and maintain lab notebooks and accurate records.

  • Demonstrated skill to work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work with mice and be comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.

  • Must be willing and able to work safely with BL2-level viral and bacterial preparations.

  • Must be willing and able to work safely with radioactive materials.

  • Flexible work schedule required. Willingness and ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as required by the needs of the research project(s).

  • Must be able to work on feet all day and willing and able to safely lift mouse cages.

  • The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $73,043 - $117,557 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $34.98 - $56.30

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
