The worksite for this position is at the UC San Diego/SIO La Jolla Campus.

DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a skilled Staff Research Associate 1 or 2 (level depending on experience).

SRA 1 Description:

Under supervision, be primarily responsible for the preparation and world-wide distribution of reference materials for oceanic carbon dioxide measurements. These reference materials (which include stabilized natural seawater, Tris buffer solutions in synthetic seawater, and alkalinity titration acid solutions) are prepared by the incumbent to exacting standards in significant quantities, and are used throughout the world (in at least 150 laboratories in more than 35 countries) as the primary means of calibration and/or quality control for these important oceanographic measurements. May assist in hiring and training undergraduate student employees.

Under close technical supervision, performs a variety of standard experimental procedures in support of a research program in ocean carbon dioxide measurements. Arrange collection of samples. Track samples for laboratory, entering data into database as required. Assists with conducting analysis of seawater for CO2 parameters.

Undertake limited fieldwork, and perform any necessary chemical analyses. Maintain laboratory notebook; enter experimental data into computer; produce written &/or oral reports. Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies inventory. Ensure equipment maintenance. Order lab supplies.

SRA 2 Description:

Under supervision of the supervisor, primarily responsible for the preparation and world-wide distribution of reference materials for oceanic carbon dioxide measurements. These reference materials (which include stabilized natural seawater, Tris buffer solutions in synthetic seawater, and alkalinity titration acid solutions) are prepared by the incumbent to exacting standards in significant quantities, and are used throughout the world (in at least 150 laboratories in more than 35 countries) as the primary means of calibration and/or quality control for these important oceanographic measurements. Perform a wide variety of chemical analyses, including qualitative and quantitative analyses of unknowns, by using standard methods and by developing modifications of standard methods to meet special needs. Assist in hiring and training undergraduate student employees and providing work leadership.

Will be expected (when needed) to make high-quality chemical analytical measurements related to oceanic carbon dioxide research, and may be required to participate in seagoing activities including preparation for field work, collection of samples, and at-sea analysis of seawater samples.

Additional duties may include:

  • Perform a wide variety of chemical analyses, including qualitative and quantitative analyses of unknowns, by using standard methods and by developing modifications of standard methods to meet special needs.

  • Assist in hiring and training undergraduate student employees and providing work leadership.

  • Will be expected (when needed) to make high-quality chemical analytical measurements related to oceanic carbon dioxide research, and may be required to participate in seagoing activities including preparation for field work, collection of samples, and at-sea analysis of seawater samples.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. Chemistry, Geology/Geochemistry) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated laboratory experience in a chemistry laboratory.

  • Demonstrated writing and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory safety procedures.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of ocean CO2 chemistry.

  • Experience using personal computers for data processing and word processing.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to undertake fieldwork at sea on occasion.

  • Must have access to reliable transportation and/or a valid driver's license to operate a University vehicle.

  • Job offer of is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,260 - $96,936 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.86 - $46.43

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
