Anatomic Laboratory Technician-Hospital

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Oversees daily planning, coordination and training of technical activities in the hospital anatomic laboratory technician area. Ensures procedures in the area are performed accurately and promptly using the accepted quality control guidelines. Performs instrument maintenance.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Coordinates the daily operation of the hospital laboratory technicians at multiple locations.

3. *Provides assistance and training to staff members on new methods, procedures, requirements, etc.

4. *Coordinates with Laboratory leadership to ensure all CAP requirements are met.

5. *Creates schedules and executes other daily team leadership duties.

6. *Ensures manuals and procedures are up-to-date and procedures are performed per CAP guidelines.

7. *Maintains cleanliness and stocking at multiple hospital lab locations.

8. *Performs daily clerical tasks as deemed necessary by a pathologist or Anatomic Laboratory Manager.

9. *Prepares specimens for testing.

10. *Performs Frozen Sections and collects Fine Needle Aspirations.

11. *Enters patient and specimen information data accurately into the computer system.

12. Provides assistance to various departments and clients by retrieving specimens, reports as requested.

13. Transports specimens to various laboratory sites as required.

14. Tracks and files slides, blocks and paperwork

15. Receives and makes inbound and outbound calls to clients and provides problem resolution.

16. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

17. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

18. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

4. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

6. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

7. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

8. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

9. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and training equivalent to 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that include:

* Six (6) semester hours of chemistry

* Six (6) semester hours of biology

* Twelve (12) additional semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology courses in any combination.

Bachelor degree required or at least three (3) years of recent experience in a histology laboratory required.

Previous work experience in a medical laboratory is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors.
