UC San Diego's Department of Music builds upon the University's vision to "align our efforts to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university" as the country's foremost graduate program in contemporary and experimental music. Graduate degree programs focus in Composition, Computer Music, Integrative Studies, and Performance. The undergraduate program at UC San Diego offers a bachelor of arts in music, music humanities, and ICAM (Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts). The curriculum emphasizes the development of musical listening and performance skills as applied to both contemporary and traditional music. The Department enrolls students in its 42 to 47 undergraduate courses and seminars each quarter. There are over 151 Music Majors and 163 Music minors in addition to 90 students pursuing either MA, PhD, or DMA graduate degrees. The Department produces over 300 events each academic year, across the wide spectrum of performance arts disciplines, from solo instrumentalist recitals, to 70+ person orchestral performances, to fully staged annual opera productions, to the 600+ person UC San Diego Gospel Choir performing each term (three times a year) in Mandeville Auditorium. The Department has 26 ladder rank faculty, 1 lecturer with security of employment (LSOE), 4 Unit 18 lecturers, 8 administrative staff and 7 Production staff supporting Department activity. The Department is responsible for three facilities containing multiple performance spaces: the Conrad Prebys Music Center, with the 380 seat Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, the 144 seat Recital Hall, and the 170 seat Experimental Theater), Warren Lecture Hall (with Recording Studios A & B), 5 project studios and 800 seat Mandeville Auditorium, the largest performing arts facility on the UC San Diego campus. Mandeville Auditorium, a 23,417 sq. ft. full service recharge facility, hosts major campus events and performances including annual residencies by departments and organizations including the Helen Edison Lecture Series, ArtPower, University Events Office, Muir Musical, Kaibigang Pilipino, Vietnamese Student Association, Chinese Students and Scholars Association, Explorer Academy, Black Student Union, Welcome Week orientations fo the campus colleges, and guest speakers including political figures, noted authors and Nobel laureates. In addition to campus engagement, Mandeville Auditorium actively hosts community organizations through performances by the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, San Diego Ballet, Indian Fine Arts Academy, and various National dance competitions and showcases including: Culture Shock, Bravo!, Leap, Spotlight, and StarQuest International. The Theater Production Specialist 4 (Technical Director) is responsible for day-to-day activities, policies and procedures, financial and personnel management, training and supervision of production staff and students, associated with the technical aspects of simultaneous productions at Mandeville Auditorium. The Technical Director is the primary representative of the Department of Music at Mandeville Auditorium and has the responsibility for maintenance of facility and stage equipment, safety compliance and establishing procedures for operations for all users within the facilities. Plans and manages all production and technical aspects of Mandeville Auditorium, coordinating with clients, guest and touring technical supervisors, programming staff, and production staff. Coordinates collaborative event operations with University representatives including: the Chancellor's Office, Special Events and Protocol, the Division of Arts and Humanities, UC San Diego Police, College Business Office, College Provosts' Offices, Center for Student Involvement, University Events Office, University Centers Technical Services, Facilities Management, Special Events Parking, UC San Diego Catering, as well as various technical and supporting external vendors. Responsible for all aspects of managing subordinate staff and stage crew members, and evaluates their performance, guides workload, addresses all supervisory issues at Mandeville Auditorium. Responsible for the implementation and operation of safety protocols. The Technical Director facilitates production requirements, theater management, construction, installation and maintenance of elements in a variety of theatrical craft and arts areas including direction, technical support, stage crews, lighting, sound, scenery, rigging, props, projection, multimedia, wardrobe, hair and make-up, and artist hospitality. The Technical Director operates with a high level of autonomy and leadership, serving as primary technical and production manager for all events based at Mandeville Auditorium from initial bookings to event operations through settlement and event billing. The Technical Director is a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently, requires analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Position reports to the Department of Music Production Manager, based at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, and serves as the primary back-up in their absence.
Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
