Description

West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech) is seeking to hire a full-time 9-month, Assistant Professor of Psychology (tenure-track). WVU Tech is a four-year regional campus within the WVU system located in Beckley, WV. WVU Tech has a student body of roughly 1000 full-time students, and the location in Beckley puts the university at the southern end of the newly minted New River Gorge National Park.

Though WVU Tech is a small, STEM-focused school, the undergraduate Psychology program is one of the largest majors with between 60 and 80 students. The program also features a rodent laboratory and several observation rooms maintained by the faculty for undergraduate teaching and faculty research. A potential applicant's area of specialization is open. In addition to upper-level courses in their area of expertise, the successful applicant will teach Introduction to Psychology and Research Methodology and Analysis classes. Responsibilities include teaching a minimum of 12 credit or contact hours (e.g., typically four courses per semester); establishing and maintaining an active research program suitable for a teaching-heavy position; engaging undergraduate students in research; contributing to the assessment of the psychology major and student learning outcomes; advising and mentoring undergraduate psychology majors; and engaging in campus initiatives to increase retention and enrollment; as well as being active in service to the department and engaging in service to the campus as a whole.

Salary will be commensurate with applicant experience and internal parity. In-semester overload and summer teaching opportunities may be available.

The expected start date for this position is August 2025.

WVU Tech is an inclusive campus situated in Beckley, WV. Beckley is a small town in southern WV with easy access to several state and national parks including the New River Gorge National Park & Reserve that offer ample opportunity for hiking, whitewater rafting, and other outdoor recreation options.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Psychology, psychology subfield (e.g., developmental psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology, etc.), or a related discipline (e.g., behavioral neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, etc.)
  • At least two years of teaching experience at the college or university level
