The Library Cafe Manager is a working manager position who assists the staff in daily operations, including the preparation and service of food and beverages, ensures outstanding customer service is received by our guests. They perform operational management functions under the direction of the Retail Manager. In addition, the Library Cafe Manager acts as a liaison for our national brand partnership (Starbucks' "We Proudly Serve") and as a point-of-contact with Fintel Library leadership. This position is a highly visible and manages an annual operating budget of over $400,000, and serves over 1,750 guests each week. Key Responsibilities:
- Serve customers with enthusiasm in a positive and friendly manner.
- Complete training programming as directed to have a strong knowledge of menu items to ensure food and beverages are prepared and served to operation standards, and to provide customers with product details
- Ensure compliance to food safety, sanitation, workplace safety standards, and other department and college policies.
- Perform hiring functions for student and non-student staff and creates a positive environment.
- Process financial deposits, accurately handle payment transactions using a variety of tenders, including: Cash, Credit, student meal plans, etc..
- Maintain rapport with our national brand and collegiate partners and vendors.
- Maintain all equipment, cleaning as required for peak operating performance.
- Support operation's inventory of menu items to assist in ordering products.
- Serve as a primary source of communication and information-sharing to the staff.
- Support the planning and implementation of marketing strategies for the cafe.
- Opening and closing of cafe following operating procedures.
- Maintain the point-of-sale (register) and mobile ordering platforms for the cafe location.
- Ensure daily & weekly cleaning tasks are completed as required in the cafe.
- Schedules preventative maintenance servicing for equipment to keep in top working condition.
- Working with unit financials, file daily deposit records, maintains sales and inventory records; performs seasonal forecasting by reviewing prior year sales history; prepares and presents periodic and scheduled financial reports, and performs other financial tasks to meet operation and department's financial goals. Accurately record operational data as needed.
- Manages and controls inventory: places orders, receives stock; checks invoices, maintains quality control, takes physical supplies and equipment inventories.
- Work to achieve high quality customer and client satisfaction scores.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to compute basic math.
- Advanced knowledge in food service operations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, dynamic flexibility, and critical thinking, and ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
- Advanced skills and experience with computerized menu management systems and knowledge of office and industry software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, e-mail and web-based applications. Ability to learn new programs.
- Excellent decision making and reasoning skills, and excellent ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and perform operations analysis and quality control analysis.
- Excellent and effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to all levels of personnel.
- Ability to effectively respond to a high-pressure environment and/or unpredictable outcomes.
- Effective leadership and interpersonal skills to provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to subordinates of various levels and within various job families.
- Experience managing college & university food service operations (preferred).
- Experience working with menu management, food ordering, and time clock software (preferred).
- Experience with budget and report management (preferred).
Education & Experience:
- 3+ years of food service experience with thorough knowledge in coffee/barista operations.
- 2+ years' experience in a foodservice supervisory role.
- Familiarity with safe food service principles and VA Dept. of Health guidelines.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- Satisfactory conviction history background check.
- Maintain a valid VA driver's license, a clean DMV record and successful completion of required Roanoke College driver training programs.
- Current Serve Safe Certification or within 6 months of employment, and renewed as needed.
- Dining services staff are considered essential personnel. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension due to weather or other emergency condition, this position is expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension.
- Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays, to accommodate operational needs.
