Location: Lenexa, KS

Job Summary and Purpose:

This position is responsible for providing both general and molecular support for poultry and swine coccidiosis programs. Key duties include organizing daily laboratory activities related to parasitological submissions, performing and overseeing traditional parasitology techniques and research, as well as applying molecular biology methods for detecting and analyzing coccidian parasites. Responsibilities also include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting field results, as well as overseeing research trials. In addition, this role will collaborate closely with Ceva veterinarians and sales teams to offer technical support to customers.

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

Laboratory

  • Laboratory Supervision & Departmental Collaboration: Oversee laboratory activities and contribute to key departmental functions, including project planning, budgeting, team management, and resolving intra- and inter-departmental challenges. Actively participate in weekly team meetings to ensure alignment on timelines and objectives.

  • Coccidian Expertise: Develop extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of coccidian life cycles, Ceva cocci products, along with proficiency in relevant laboratory techniques.

  • Training & SOP Development: Develop comprehensive training materials and author standard operating procedures (SOPs) for parasitology, ensuring consistent and accurate laboratory practices.

  • Cross-Functional Project Support: Provide assistance on projects spanning Industrial Operations, Scientific Support, and Product Support, ensuring smooth execution and collaboration across departments.

  • Data Compilation & Reporting: Compile and organize research results from various SSIU departments, delivering clear and accurate reports for clients.

  • Experimental Trial Design & Leadership: Design and lead experimental trials, including animal trials, ensuring scientific rigor and adherence to best practices.

  • Molecular Techniques & Analysis: Possess extensive hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques, including qPCR and next-generation sequencing (NGS).

  • Whole Genome Sequencing & Genetic Analysis: Analyze and assemble whole genome sequencing data (short- and long-read NGS), focusing on genetic variation analyses such as SNPs, INDELs, and genomic rearrangements.

  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic laboratory environment.

Teamwork with R&D, and Sales & Marketing

  • Training & SOP Development: Organize and contribute to the creation of training materials and author standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent and effective practices.

  • Data Communication & Organization: Efficiently track, communicate, and organize results and data, ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of information.

  • Field Trials & Study Design: Design and assist in conducting animal field trials or studies, adapting to project needs and ensuring scientific integrity.

  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Engage in cross-training with internal teams to foster collaboration and enhance skill sets across departments.

Technical / Functional Competencies:

  • Parasitology: Expertise in designing and analyzing laboratory and field trials, along with conducting diagnostic testing. Proficient in applying advanced statistical tools for veterinary and animal health research, ensuring rigorous and accurate results in parasitology studies.

  • Molecular Biology: Proficient in techniques such as next-generation sequencing and other advanced molecular biology methodologies.

  • Technical Writing: Skilled in drafting comprehensive USDA reports, protocols, and research papers with precision and clarity.

  • Project Management: Strong time management, prioritization, and planning abilities, with proven success in managing multiple projects simultaneously and delivering on deadlines.

  • Independent Work & Knowledge Development: Demonstrated ability to work autonomously while continually expanding technical and theoretical expertise.

  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and oral communication abilities in English, with experience delivering clear and effective presentations.

Qualifications:

Education -

  • Ph.D. in Parasitology or related field.

  • Masters in Parasitology or related discipline preferred, with 3+ years of relevant experience.

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in science-related field, with 5+ years of experience in diagnostic or parasitology laboratory setting.

Work Experience -

  • Coccidian Expertise: In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with coccidian life cycles and related laboratory techniques, essential for parasitology research and diagnostics.

  • Molecular Biology Proficiency: Strong foundation in molecular biology techniques, including advanced methods for analysis, such as qPCR and next-generation sequencing (NGS).

  • Microbiology Background: Solid understanding of general microbiology principles and practices, with practical experience in laboratory settings.

Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.

  • Possesses strong visual inspection skills, including color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus as needed.

Working Conditions:

  • Relocation Required: Must relocate to the Kansas City area, specifically the Lenexa, Kansas Laboratory.

  • Work Environment: Primarily based in a laboratory setting.

Travel Required:

  • Position involves up to 10%.
