1Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer III works on a cross-functional team to develop innovative products and technology for release to the market. They are responsible for all aspects of engineering design, analysis, prototyping, test, and documentation of components and assemblies for Montana Instruments technology and products. This position supports new product introductions, new custom-engineered products, new technology developments, and sustaining engineering efforts; striving to release designs on schedule and under budget while meeting internal and external customer expectations and specifications.
2Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Expectations
- Develop new products and technologies from concept to production.
- Utilize engineering principles to design complex mechanical components, assemblies, and systems while striving for simplicity.
- Apply advanced analytical methods including simulations, modeling, and quantitative testing to inform design decisions, validate performance, and continuously refine mechanical systems based on empirical data.
- Create and release engineering drawings, bills of materials, reports, and presentations.
- Build and iterate on prototypes in the lab, developing and executing test plans to verify performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Align with cross-functional teams including electrical engineering and software engineering to ensure designs integrate into overall system architecture.
- Collaborate with the Sales and Product Management teams to understand customer requirements.
- Collaborate with Project Management to communicate needs, clear project roadblocks, accomplish tasks, and align work with company priorities.
- Collaborate with the Operations team to develop products that meet manufacturability and serviceability needs.
- Use root cause analysis to solve problems and prevent recurrence.
- Manage own time and lead projects when required.
- Manage development of mechanical sub-systems that integrate into overall system design.
- Participate in technical design reviews, providing feedback to enhance quality and performance.
- Learn, follow, teach, and continuously improve our internal processes.
3 Minimum Qualifications (Experience /Education)
- Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related technical position,
- 5-8 years experience in mechanical design and product development
4Competencies // Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)
- Team player with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate seamlessly across the organization.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles including mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science and the ability to intuitively and effectively utilize them.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. SOLIDWORKS)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills with ability to articulate complex technical concepts across the organization.
- Able to prioritize several concurrent projects and multitask.
- Comfortable working in a lab environment with tools, test equipment, and prototypes-combining analytical thinking with hands-on execution.
- Action-oriented self-starter, able to work in a fast-paced environment with accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical drawing standards (ASME Y14) and best practices for manufacturing parts and assemblies.
- Experience with ERP systems and understanding of engineering and manufacturing interface with these systems
- Experience leading projects
5Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with vacuum and/or cryogenic systems
- Experience with vibrations design and analysis
- Exposure to simulation tools such as FEA for mechanical performance validation
- Experience developing mechanical systems for scientific instruments or high-precision applications
