Job Summary

Under supervision, help maintain a herd of exercised Thoroughbred research horses and implement drug administration studies as designed by the Pharmacologist. Support the laboratory management needs of the Pharmacologist by collecting data, performing data analysis, assisting with the training of students and other lab personnel, record keeping, and information management.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No minimal education required.
  • Experience working with potentially fractious horses including handling sedated horses that may be unsteady on their feet, and restraining horses that may be rearing, bolting, biting or striking with the skill to apply twitches (neck or lip) and lip chain.
  • Experience collecting blood samples via direct venipuncture.
  • Experience and skills to work with horses in an experimental setting, including handling techniques to facilitate procedures including but not limited to administering drugs/medications intravenously, orally, and topically, collecting blood samples via direct venipuncture and placing intravenous and urinary catheters.
  • Computer skills including data entry, creation of spreadsheets and maintenance of databases.
  • Skills performing mathematical calculations, data and knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Skills to maintain and operate a wide range of manual and computer-controlled equipment including microtiter plate reader, automated immunoassay systems, holter monitors, ECGs and thermal nociceptive equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skills to train and instruct student assistants and other lab personnel in performance of their duties, monitor their performance, and coordinate schedules.
  • Computer skills to effectively use Windows based programs, perform literary searches and use statistical and graphing programs.

Department Overview

CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies, and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment
