Minimum Qualifications |
The
Office of General Counsel seeks to fill an entry-level assistant general counsel position.
The winning candidate will be a professionally extroverted attorney who will serve Appalachian State University and will engage in a wide-ranging, intellectually challenging, fast-paced, and demanding practice in an educational setting. The position will support many units within the University and will primarily be a generalist, with the opportunity to develop and develop specific areas of interest/specialties. Because of the high standard we require, this position will remain open until filled by the correct candidate.
The position will work in the Office of General Counsel to provide legal advice and counsel to the senior leaders of Appalachian State University. The position serves under the supervision and direction of the general counsel and may take assignments from other peer and senior attorneys.
Candidates must be admitted to the North Carolina bar or be admitted to the bar of another state and prepared to seek immediate admission in North Carolina within one year of the date of employment.
This position will work closely with, and often at the direction of, other attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs to provide professional, actionable legal advice and counsel in a variety of subject areas, including human resources and employment law, budget and finance, governance, and risk management. Key responsibilities will include:
- drafting and revising Appalachian State University policies.
- conducting legal research and drafting legal documents (including memoranda and opinions).
- reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts and service agreements.
- supporting the Office of Human Resources in employment-related matters.
- providing litigation support, including discovery review.

License/Certification Required |
North Carolina Bar membership in good standing, or licensure in good standing in another state on the date of initial employment and licensure to practice law in North Carolina within one year of initial date of employment pursuant to The University of North Carolina Policy Manual, Section 300.1.3. |
Preferred Qualifications |
Focused experience in one or more of the following areas is also preferred:(1) Employment law (including
FMLA/
OFLA,
ADA, discrimination, and similar issues); (2) Contract review and drafting (particularly for higher education or governmental clients); (3) Research, Intellectual Property, Sponsored Programs and Regulatory Compliance. |
