Supervising Attorney

POSITION OVERVIEW

This role offers the opportunity to lead the local unit team, under the supervision of the Unit Director of the corresponding Unit, providing quality services to clients while providing a positive workplace for RAICES employees to grow. The Supervising Attorney will be part of a community of the Legal Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Works with the Unit Director to develop and maintain local best practices that are aligned with the mission, vision and legal strategy of RAICES;
  • Communicates best practices to local unit team members through training and supervision and helps establish and monitor KPIs;
  • Manages the day-to-day activities and services delivered by the branch office's Unit and provides relevant information to the Unit Director and local Managing Attorney,
  • Supervises the work of Attorneys and Accredited Representatives by managing the needs of the team's representation work, including providing legal support, performance feedback and substantive and procedural guidance,
  • Monitors workflow and caseload of staff to identify and address potential workload issues and progress,
  • Works closely with the Unit Director and Managing Attorney to provide internal training and organizes external training for new and veteran staff in relevant practice areas,
  • Participates in interviews and evaluation process for designated staff,
  • Informs Managing Attorneys and Unit Directors of necessary information regarding their unit needs for budget proposals,
  • Fosters an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive work culture,
  • Handles a caseload to maintain legal practice and expertise, and,
  • Performs other additional duties as needed, including performing legal and casework when staff unavailability necessitates coverage of work or to other appropriate circumstances such as, for example, providing on-the-job training to staff or for professional development.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications



  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school,
  • Current bar membership in good standing within the United States,
  • Barred in Texas is preferred, may be required if specified to meet Grant Requirements,
  • Minimum 2 years' experience practicing immigration law or unit equivalent work. Law school experience will be considered,
  • Minimum 1 year experience supervising a team of attorney and/or legal assistants i.e. multiple legal staff members or varying job titles,
  • Grant requirements may include bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency, and
  • Able to pass a Federal Background Check.



Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color, in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process; and
  • Experience in immigration and/or criminal law preferred.
