Position Summary Chord Energy is seeking an experienced and results-driven Senior Regulatory and Royalty Accountant to join our team and ensure that we continue to meet all compliance, reporting, and financial obligations related to severance taxes, royalties, and federal reporting. This position will play a pivotal role in managing regulatory accounting functions, particularly related to North Dakota severance taxes, Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR) reporting, and state royalties. Occasional travel to our core operating areas will be required. This position is located in downtown Houston, TX. Hybrid work schedule is an option for remote work on Mondays and Fridays. Level and salary commensurate with experience. Essential Job Functions North Dakota Severance and Withholding Reporting
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and filing of North Dakota severance tax returns.
  • Monitor and reconcile state withholding requirements for oil and gas production in North Dakota.
  • Work closely with internal teams and external tax advisors to maintain compliance with North Dakota tax regulations.
  • Assist in audits and state tax compliance reviews related to severance taxes.
Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR) Reporting
  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual ONRR reports, ensuring compliance with federal regulations.
  • Coordinate with production, land, and revenue teams to ensure accurate reporting of production volumes, royalty payments, and severance tax data.
  • Review ONRR audit findings and work to resolve discrepancies or issues in reporting.
State Royalties
  • Oversee the calculation and payment of state royalties, ensuring timely and accurate payments to the relevant state authorities.
  • Collaborate with land, legal, and revenue teams to resolve any royalty-related discrepancies or disputes.
  • Prepare and file state royalty reports in accordance with individual state regulations and ensure compliance.
General Regulatory Compliance and Reporting
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Provide guidance on regulatory issues, accounting procedures, and ensure the company's compliance efforts are up to date.
  • Maintain documentation related to regulatory reporting and tax filings for audit and internal review purposes.
  • Assist with special projects as needed, including audits and severance tax refunds.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Engineering, Business, or related field.
  • 10 years of relevant industry experience in regulatory accounting for an E&P operator within the upstream oil & gas sector.
  • Expertise in reporting software such as Procount, Enertia, and other upstream ERP systems.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, SQL queries, and data visualization tools such as Power BI, Spotfire, and Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret large datasets and translate them into actionable insights.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey complex data insights and reports to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and fluid environment; flexible with the demands of a growing company

  • Experience in automation and systems integration within production reporting processes to enhance efficiency and data accuracy.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL, with the ability to write complex queries for data extraction and analysis.
