Job Summary

Responsible for the overall management of the histocompatibility laboratory. Responsible for clinical consultations as well as involvement in the development of technical protocols for clinical testing including HLA typing (SSP, qPCR, NGS), crossmatching (flow cytometry), solid phase HLA antibody testing among others. Responsible for the quality of operations and services provided by the histocompatibility laboratory, including the responsibility for reviewing and overseeing all technical aspects of the laboratory. Directs technologist staff and is responsible for the design, implementation and review of all technical processes that involve the histocompatibility lab. Responsible for personnel management, exemplary customer service, development, implementation and monitoring of testing, staff training and evaluation and budget management. On-call responsibilities, including consults for virtual crossmatching, and technical/interpretation questions. Helps with the training and education of laboratory personnel, residents, and fellows from Nephrology and Surgery departments. Represents Prisma Health at local, regional and national levels as a liaison between Prisma Health Medical Center and the various agencies and professional organizations.

  • Develops standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the laboratory, reviews and updates existing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and designs appropriate validation studies.

  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory and accrediting agency requirements for the laboratory

  • Develops and maintains an adequate and robust quality assurance program for the laboratory.

  • Develops on-going mechanisms to analyze data on the accuracy of histocompatibility testing.

  • Serves as technical expert in areas of expertise including implementing new technologies, new testing and operating methods, including testing for comprehensive and performance accuracy when a new test or process method is implemented

  • Establishes and defines goals, objectives and an operational plan that supports goals and objectives

  • Identifies opportunities for operational and customer service improvement. Develops and implements solutions/processes

  • Assists in marketing histocompatibility laboratory services to other transplant programs within the state and surrounding out of state transplant programs

  • Participates in regional and national transplant activities as an expert in the field of histocompatibility (i.e., ASHI, UNOS, etc.) including serving on committees in order to help direct regional and national policy and procedure development.

  • Assists with establishment of capital and operational budgets. Monitors budgets and expenses to control and/or justify variances.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education - Doctorate (Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree)

  • Experience - Two (2) years of experience clinical pathway that will qualify as an HLA laboratory director. Experience in histocompatibility testing, transplant immunology and immunogenetics which meets the requirements for ACHI Board certification. Clinical experience in solid organ and bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplants preferred.

  • Board certification or eligible for certification by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI).

  • Must meet CLIA requirements for a Technical Supervisor, Laboratory Director and Clinical Consultant.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Mathematical skills.

  • Communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Ability to provide clinical laboratory support for solid organ and bone marrow transplantation programs.

  • Familiar with laboratory QA/QC programs as they pertain to histocompatibility and immunogenetics.
